That IS a mistake even greedy Sony did not make...
You are not correct. You can have 6 devices like the Sony but the PC isn't one of them you you really get more than Sony. In addition you can set up a group account for you 6 licenses so you family can all get the book even if they don't live with you using a separate account. Still think it is a mistake.

Did you all see this article:

Consider also the Sony Reader, which has been a modest success: Sony claimed it was "exceeding expectations" and that e-book sales were outpacing music sales at its online store, as of January 2007. That said, who buys music from Sony's online store? Sony reportedly has a new, wireless Reader in the works, too, so there appear to be at least some legs in this market.

That's what I have not been able to find a clear answer to - I live in the states, but it's in the middle of no where in the states. No cell phone service at the house (sprint or anyone else!), so can I buy a book on Saturday morning on line, and then export it to the kindle myself via USB? Or do I have to 'go into town' to get a signal??

In the Kindle forum someone already bought a book and downloaded it to his pc. He is still waiting for his Kindle to appear they registered it before it even shipped. He will use USB to load the file from his PC tomorrow when his Kindle appears.

Agree with TadW - the name smacks of book burning. Not exactly a bibliophile's choice. Unfortunate.

Wonder if that's referring back to the comments from CES last year ...?

The prices depend on publishers.
Who is Sony?
Sony is not a book shop.
Who is Amazon?
Amazon is the biggest online shop in the world.

Do publishers care how many a tiny Sony book shop sells? No. Do they care how many books Amazon can sell? Yes! They most likely do!
Publishers can tell Sony what to sell and the price, however, when it come to dealing with amazon....they are going to be much more flexible if they want to stay in business. Because Amazon is one of the biggest driving forces that sell their products.

This is the main reason I am disapointed with Amazon's offerring. Though not expected, I was hoping they might make their ebook catalogue available to other devices. I was also hoping for some indication that the would support an epub standard.

Instead we get a closed book store and another DRM format (at least for now).

To be fair, Apple wasn't a music shop, either. In fact, Sony has the benefit of actually being a media company as well. (It hasn't always worked in their favor, tho). But, I can see why they are doing things that way, the same why Amazon is doing it as well.

Personally, the Kindle isn't really looking all that attractive. I've never been a fan of the "one stop shop" model. I like having options and competition, especially when it comes to non-tangible items like e-books. The extra features over the Sony don't really have me wanting it.

It's not "another" DRM format. It's just Mobipocket with a different file extension.

Well, effectively it's different, because it's deliberately not compatible with existing Mobi files and vendors. The same was done by Microsoft with Zune: the DRM algorithm is basically the same, but it's not compatible with PlaysForSure infrastructure.

No, it literally is Mobi DRM. If you take a Kindle file, rename it to ".prc" or ".mobi" and open it in Mobi Reader, you see the cover page and get told that the book hasn't been activated for your device. This is precisely the same behavior you get with any other Mobi DRM file that's not encoded for your device. It looks as if all that's happening is that this is standard MobiPocket DRM using a PID that's internal to the Kindle.

I'm not worried about Amazon owning the market. Aside from bringing ebooks (and especially e-ink) into the public eye, it seems easy enough to get material on and off the Kindle. Some people here have written some incredibly useful tools for converting just about anything into anything else, so once we get to text/rtf/etc we can easily get to html. Sure, most consumers will stick with the formats Amazon gives them, but more manufacturers will mean more competition, and more reason to convince consumers that there's more than one game in town.

I'm interested in how the browser works, however, since I'm sure there will be stops in place to prevent free EVDO browsing. If the Kindle gets WiFi and can manage USB host (or BT, think GPS) then I'll sell my 500 and roll the cost of the Kindle into my next low-end laptop purchase.

I figure it just means that mobi DRM is going to get busted wide open really soon.
