There was similar debate over on the Brighthand forums when the HP 210 PDA came out. People were seeing large battery drop overnight. It turns out that some cheapo SD cards never go into low power mode and so draw power continuously. The answer was to spend a little bit more and buy from trusted brands such as Sandisk, Kingston etc.

Perhaps the same effect is being seen here?

This may also explain why memory sticks do not exhibit the problem. As Sony has such tight control on this format the quality is naturally higher.
