If we have one company controlling things, it stifles creativity of different companies doing different things. So that is why it would be bad if Amazon won the war. Nobody should win the war except the consumers. And for that to happen, I do feel that everyone should play nice and to play nice, that means one eBook format with one DRM. And that format is not KF8.

I'm sorry I'm so behind the curve here. It seems that there's a well-established dislike for the .mobi format, but I've been unable to really find a breakdown of its flaws (something tells me that a forum search for "mobi" would be unproductive... or rather, excessively productive). Could someone tell me (or direct me to a particular post that tells me) why mobi stacks up so poorly to, say, ePub?

Edit: nevermind, I think I've managed to answer at least most of my question. Sorry!

By any chance do you have a manifesto we could read?

A monopoly is never good for consumers. Which is why I support Amazon's efforts to keep the ePub format from attaining monopoly among the ebook formats. If Amazon wouldn't fight the good fight, ePub would rule and that would not be good for humanity.

From the FAQ
Quote:
Q: Will KF8 capabilities be available on all Kindle devices?
A: Kindle Fire is the first Kindle device to support KF8 - in the coming months we will roll out KF8 to our latest generation Kindle e-ink devices as well as our free Kindle reading apps.
What isn't certain is support for the Kindle Keyboard, it seems likely that the K1 and K2 are out of luck.

The term Amazon used is 'latest generation'. I think K4 makes the cut. The K3/KK is the model most in question.

I suspect the DX models might be out of luck as well.

Wait! Let me guess. Now don't tell me. Don't give me any hints. You use epub, right?

The one thing I have been missing—probably even more than better CSS options—is better TOC navigation. If only they would provide 'NCX view' like the Kindle Previewer has, and/or copied the new ePub3 replacement for NCX. I guess they could add this later, but this would be an especially good time to make a change in this area.

Amazon is not fighting a monopoly. They are leveraging their near monopoly on the ebook market in order to put out their own format, and in turn using the format to further enhance their monopoly.

Sorry, but amazon users cannot simultaneously argue that ePub is not a standard that needs to be followed AND ePub is a monopoly to be fought against.

If there's anything new under the sun, you can bet the DX won't get it

I was being facetious, mate.

However, I also do not espouse the cause of ePub as a standard that absolutely needs to be followed. I have no problems with the mobi format. It is DRM I have a gripe with. The issue as I see it, is DRM vs non-DRM. Not DRM vs ePub.

A format having a monopoly doesn't mean it's something that needs to be followed.
