Less excersize than any population in the history of mankind is by far the biggest factor.

People not dying from previously mortal injuries and illnesses - which now leave them debilitated in their capacity to exercise even if they desire to, and stuck using meds which have weight gain as a side effect is also a factor greater than over eating.

Studies have shown that weight gain is 75% a result of over eating rather than under exercising. Increasing activity as an aid to weight loss is much less effective than cutting down on calories.
