So, historically, it was originally nay sayer... then nay-sayer... and now it's turned into naysayer.

Very cool!

What i would like to know is if we can get a ginormous multi-volume OED on the Kindle!?!

Oh, Blossom suggested the 1913 (?) Dictionary posted here on MobileRead - to be used for older text with obsolete terms, but it completely killed Cailbre. It took forever trying to open in the book view so I deleted it.

Sorry, my first Kindle/ereader. So if I had pdf books, is the best/easiest way to upload to my kindle via emailing the file to my amazon account, or with Calibre?

ETA: Oh, oops... looks like I've got OED access. So, in 1628, we've got, "A gude asker wald have a gude na sayer." And then in 1721, "A sturdy Beggar should have a stout Naysayer."

But in 1974, "Further to refute the nay-sayers, he cites poll after poll in which Americans say they are happy." But then again in 2000, "Many naysayers‥are trying to showcase the California experience as a dismal failure."

So, it looks like there is no clear consensus.
My second edition OED (micrographic compact edition) lists Nay-say, Nay-sayer, and Nay-saying all as keyword entries with hyphens, though next to the keyword for nay-say, it says "also naysay." In the citations for all of them, as seen above, it seems to list examples with and without hyphens.
Personally, I like the hyphen.

Man, I love the OED. I need to get a better magnifying glass and browse mine more often.

I know that you can access the OED online if your library has a subscription. No Kindle version just yet.

It's a tad pricey if you won't to purchase a copy of your own: http://www.amazon.com/Oxford-English...3174789&sr=8-2

The micrographic compact edition and the CD ROM version all have the complete text of the full edition and are a lot cheaper.
The compact edition can be found used dirt cheap, but you pretty much need serious magnifying glass to read it.

There's always the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary in two volumes. I have it, and though it's nowhere near as complete as the OED, it's a very good dictionary.

While I would like to have a kindle as a back-up reader (I do own some books from the Kindle store and read them on my iPad), I have stuck with Sony and plan on getting the newest Sony reader as well. While I understand that many people don't have use for PDF reflow, I do, and it is one of the features that has kept me buying Sony readers. I most often read PDFs on my iPad, but knowing that I can transfer an article to my Sony reader and go know that I can read it on the go if I get some time is great (I don't generally keep my iPad with me in my purse). A small screen isn't the ideal venue to read a PDF, but it is nice to know that I can in a pinch. I read a ton of PDFs, so my needs probably aren't representative of most people's reading needs, though.

Simple text files are sometimes put into pdf format to prevent most people from tampering with them. For example, pdf is a good file format to use for resumes, especially those that will be posted to web sites.
