Kennyc your a lil generous there. as an infantryman in the us army. my supplies were my ruck sack, web gear, boot knife and my m16 and my kevlar vest and kevlar helmt .. any "free food" i got was if i wanted greasy deep fried food in the mess hall thats about as good as typical hospital food. The only clothing i was provided was my battle dress uniform and my dress uniform. every pair of socks, boots, shoes, t-shirt and underware and any "civie" clothing was paid for out of my paycheck. as for the housing i was provided a shared "apartment" shared with 6 other men with 2 rooms and with bunks and footlockers and a small locker our "kitchen" was a counter with a hot plate and microwave, and a small mini fridge no sink or plumbing because there was a public bathroom where 5 such "apartments" shared. any other housing than that was paid for out of our paycheck (at a discount or given a small housing bonus) our free medical care is worse than most of the "bad" healthcare in the united states. (for example my dental work was done without painkillers). Our "benefits" may be much better than most militaries around the word give.. but in general wellfare recipients get better bennefits. Dont get me wrong im proud to have served my country and would do it again if my country asked for it. but any aid or help for fellow soldiers does wonders for morale.

I have to agree with those that try to make the point that supporting the troops (with Kindles or anything else) of a country at war is political. Evading that discussion by pointing to the P&R forum seems to me as making the political point that supporting the US troops is fine, but criticizing them isn't. |

Criticism of military personnel is political because it is implicitly directed at the mission, or at the implementation of the mission, or even the existence of the mission. But praise of military personnel can come from any quarter, even a pacifist. Praise and support of those who are willing to risk their health and lives for us is not inherently a political statement. It is a recognition of the virtues of courage and self-sacrifice. The recognition of virtue is fundamental, not political. |
