The real problem is that they have no competition in the USA for what the iPod touch can do at that price. What other device do you know at that price is a combination

mp3player
ebook reader
video game player
tv set
pocket computer

With the resources of the App Store, you get a freakin' tricorder for 200 odd bucks!

Now overseas there is the Samsung Galaxy Player available that's similar, but in the USA the Touch has no rival. Its Apple competing against Apple.

Anyway, take heart. On October 4 the answers to all our questions shall be revealed.

Exactly! There's Apple and then there's the Samsung Cloud Player made out of Vapor ...promises, promises.

I forgot it's a camera too- a crappy one, but a video and still camera- and a texting device and videophone. When you look at all that, it's a pretty good value.

The pundits are pretty confused about the iPod touch. One article says Apple should close down it's iPod line altogether , except for the nano, and another article says that Apple will be introducing a 3G equipped iPod touch with an iPhone 5. Well, 13 more days....

Slightly larger screen (4 or 4.5) and the ability to get 3G on it like the iPad would be AWESOME!

I rarely talk on a cell phone so I really can't justify the iPhone, but a $20 data plan just so I could check email, text, surf the web a bit and maybe even a rare Skype would make my iPod Touch exactly what I need!

I seem to be the odd man out - I want more space, not less. I'm currently using an 80GB Zune as my MP3 player and am at the point of having to delete content before I add a new album. 128GB is a starting point for my next player - I'm hoping larger are available when I need to buy one.

The Zune was a fantastic device, it's a shame it wasn't marketed better. Even after an iphone and ipad I still prefer the Zune's interface for music playing.

You could always go for an iPhone with a "pay as you go" data plan. That way, you'd only pay for what you use.

Hmmm. An iPod Touch with 3G is an iPhone, isn't it? You don't have to make phone calls on it if you don't want to. 99% of the "wireless" usage of my IPhone is internet access; I probably make about 1 call a month

That's for outside the USA. Here in the United States of Rule by Carriers, you have to buy a 2 year data plan if you buy an iPhone through carriers.
Apple might be readying an iPhone lite that you can buy with a prepaid plan, though. Come on October 4!

Yeah, in the US you are forced into a plan. Even if you buy out of contract you still need a voice and data. They won't let you choose. And there is not even a discount; You pay exactly the same regardless of whether your phone is subsidized.

I get voice and data too, but since I bought my iPhone "SIM-free" I have a dirt-cheap "SIM-only" contract which is a rolling monthly thing - no long-term tie-in.

See, unfortunately they they don't offer those in the US. A person who buys an unlocked phone pays exactly the same as someone who buys a phone under contract. The only benefit is that not being locked into a contract. But it's a $300-400 luxury for a high end smartphone.

It's a lot more expensive here, too, since the phone isn't bring subsidised by the carrier. Before you start thinking that I'm getting things cheaply, I should point out that I had to pay almost $1000 for my SIM-free iPhone
