That is true, but we do see that on Kindle, Active content uses .azw2. "Obviously", that can only mean .azw3 will be used for epub.

Oooh.... thanks for the info about azw2 and active content - I take it that means games and interactive stuff? The stuff we can't get outside the US?

In which case, yes, obviously azw3 is the file extension that will be used for their DRM-wrapped version of ePub .

If Amazon comes out with .azw3 as their DRM around ePub, I do hope the tools to strip that come out very fast. What we don't need is yet more DRM for ePub. Two different DRM schemes is bad enough without a third.

Apple's iBook files don't count as ePub.

File size and Searchable?

Does anyone know what the file size of these is? And are they searchable? Thanks!

For those who read only the new posts in a thread, there's an announcement in the OP of this thread that the ...you know... have been updated to handle non-rental versions of Amazon's Digital Replica (.azw4) format books. So if you need this feature, check out the usual ...you know... location.

Of course, none of us actually know what the Overdrive library book version for Kindles is going to look like, or if it will be yet another file format, but perhaps it's time to have a discussion around library books and tools. Certainly my primary use of... you know ...is to clean books from my library so that I can convert them to read on my Kindle. But if that becomes no longer necessary, should it even be a supported use?

Not everyone who uses ... you know ... on library books is doing so for a Kindle. Many readers still do not support the Adobe DRM.

You Know has always been based around the honor system. That's kind of the whole point.

Well, yes. But now we're faced with an interesting dilemma. TPTB at you know have decided (correctly, IMHO) that rental books from Amazon in the new format are just too much and shouldn't be deDRM'd. But how will this affect library books when Overdrive starts shipping native Kindle versions?

Logically, they shouldn't be deDRM'ing them. But then would they go back and stop removing DRM from library books in ePub format?

Actually, I strongly hope they do allow full functionality of all library books since they are not rented. Mostly because the wait times are so long and unpredictable that I often find myself in a position where I couldn't read the book in the very limited time available, and it's months before I could check it out again.

That and I don't believe the hype that everything will be equally offered in Mobi/Epub/Whatever version. There are Mobi/Epub copies on Overdrive right now for the same book and they aren't bundled for me, so I don't really believe they'll necessarily be bundled for libraries. Conversion in the future may still be necessary.

YES I KNOW AMAZON RELEASED A PRESS RELEASE ABOUT EVERYTHING BEING MAGICAL FOREVER. PLEASE, NO DEAD HORSE.

I don't myself much care what the creators of ... you know ... do with regard to this particular format and rentals. I'm just grateful they do their thing period, because I think it's awesome when folks share code. They don't need to go do MORE WORK for no real reason on this rental format of Amazon's.

But at the same time, I don't think the creators need to go off the excellent honor system that they currently have going. That sort of thinking is, frankly, what got us DRM locks in the first place.

Do you believe Overdrive, the ones who actually run the library lending?

Karen Estrovich is manager of content sales for OverDrive.
That is pretty unambiguous.

I'm not going to get into a Dead Horse Thread about library lending. I don't believe anything until it's actually out and implemented and I can see it with my own eyes. If that bothers someone else, that's not my problem. I merely used it as an example for why library lending and DRM issues are complicated and there need not be a sudden thread stampede because someone noticed that the DRM stripping tools out there are -- and always have been -- working on the honor system.
