IBM did the same thing. Lenovo now makes the Thinkpad, and they are doing very well with it. Android fans are waiting for the Lenovo tablet too.

I'm sad about this news,... Knew it in advance though ...

All I can say is webOs is a wonderful software but the PC market is very aggressive now. The economy is not so good, so it is very difficult to drive results with most users asking for very low prices but very good quality.

Bad timing for this decision. If the Touchpad and webOS is as good as some say, another company will pick this up if just for the patents. However, Google just bought Motorola and Amazon is making their own device as is Sony. Three fewer companies available that may be interested in HP's assets.

Amazon is doing it the correct way. First you develop a strong app store, then you develop the hardware. Something HP and MS failed to do with webOS and Zune.

HP is not selling webOs, is the PC division or hardware. As a matter of fact, it is not clear if will be a true selling or what, and that won't happen this week or tomorrow either.

Agree, webOs is a great Os. What some people don't understand or don't know is that HP is more than just PCs. PCs is just a small market. HP has and sells iTanium servers, those that you and I can't run at home. That's where the money really is, and services. Apple does not sell servers and does not have anything good at that scale, maybe Oracle, but they do not sell PCs either.

There are multiple other phone and tablet manufacturers racing against the lead and no one has slowed him down any.

Beside, HP wants to be a services company like IBM.

It is - how many companies are looking to get out of an industry they actually lead, in terms of unit sales, and actually make money in?
