It sounds like the 1992 and 1998 readers precede the PDAs mentioned, regardless. Still, if it ships with software to read and/or purchase ebooks (I don't know if that's the case with the Palm), then it is unquestionably in the ebook and ereader market. Any additional quibbling over whether it's a "dedicated" reader is irrelevant, and often a projection of one's own priorities upon the market.

You could also read on the Psion which was introduced in 1991. Just to throw another shoe in the machine.

I bought a Franklin eBookMan when they first came out - it had THE best ergonomics. Rocker wheel under my thumb of my left hand or index finger of my right, depending on which hand I held it in.
I returned it eventually because Franklin lied about .LIT support, but I did enjoy it while I had it. I love my Sony, but still long for one handed operation - the ergonomics of it aren't right for my small long-fingered hands. But let's not forget the Sony Librie. |

What I am interested in is the last ebook reader we'll ever need, if such a thing can ever exist.

I would call an electronic reader a device whose primary designed purpose was to read books. It can have other functions, but it was designed to read books. The other functions are icing to try to get people to buy THIS product.
A Palm is not an ereader, but can be used like one (and I am a long time Palm user). Same with things like the Psion and other handheld/tablet devices. |

Probably a case of "not being aware of it" rather than "forgetting it". Given that it was only ever sold in Japan, I doubt that many people in Europe or North America ever came across it.

Still, even if you want to be nit picky and say "eInk based ereader available in the US", the PRS-500 still beat the Kindle by quite a bit. |
