I think this one looks intriguing:

Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack, The (Burton & Swinburne) $1.99 Amazon only so far. SF/F/steampunk/alternative history. This is his debut book and the second one in the series, Curious Case of the Clockwork Man, The (Burton & Swinburne) is out at $9.59.

Quote:
Sir Richard Francis Burton—explorer, linguist, scholar, and swordsman; his reputation tarnished; his career in tatters; his former partner missing and probably dead. Algernon Charles Swinburne—unsuccessful poet and follower of de Sade; for whom pain is pleasure, and brandy is ruin! They stand at a crossroads in their lives and are caught in the epicenter of an empire torn by conflicting forces: Engineers transform the landscape with bigger, faster, noisier, and dirtier technological wonders; Eugenicists develop specialist animals to provide unpaid labor; Libertines oppose repressive laws and demand a society based on beauty and creativity; while the Rakes push the boundaries of human behavior to the limits with magic, drugs, and anarchy. The two men are sucked into the perilous depths of this moral and ethical vacuum when Lord Palmerston commissions Burton to investigate assaults on young women committed by a weird apparition known as Spring Heeled Jack, and to find out why werewolves are terrorizing London’s East End. Their investigations lead them to one of the defining events of the age, and the terrifying possibility that the world they inhabit shouldn’t exist at all!

About the Author
Mark Hodder is the creator and caretaker of the BLAKIANA Web site (sextonblake.co.uk), which he designed to celebrate, record, and revive Sexton Blake, the most written about fictional detective in English publishing history. A former BBC writer, editor, journalist, and Web producer, Mark has worked in all the new and traditional medias and was based in London for most of his working life until 2008, when he relocated to Valencia in Spain to de-stress and write novels. He can most often be found at the base of a palm tree, hammering at a laptop. Mark has a degree in cultural studies and loves British history (1850 to 1950, in particular), good food, cutting-edge gadgets, cult TV (ITC forever!), Tom Waits, and a vast assortment of oddities.
The reviews are more interesting than the above description, stating there are lots of twists, shocks and surprises.

After the sale not showing up in Canada the first few days I clicked the evil link again and...

Bill Allen - How To Slay a Dragon $0.99
Mo Yan - Life and Death are Wearing Me Out $0.99
Stanley Elkin - The Franchiser $2.99

Someone, please make me stop. Please. With the Canadian dollar where it is, it would be foolhardy not to pick something up. Right? Right? Anyone? Bueller?

Final Price by J. Gregory Smith $1.99

Quote:
Product Description
Wilmington, Delaware is one of those cities that feels more like a small town. Neighbors know one another, and businesses cater to the needs of the citizenry. But what happens when the local car salesman suffers one lost sale too many, when one more customer decides to buy from the competition because the price is too high, interest rates aren't friendly, or that shade of blue just won't work? In J. Gregory Smith's electrifying thriller, Final Price, Shamus Ryan's frustration works like a thorn under his skin until psychotic urges take over and he commits murder—serial murders, in fact—his victims chosen from prospective clients who dared to walk away. With Smith's chilling scenes of massacre, readers are pulled into the vortex of a warped mind, one man justifying heinous acts, and two detectives running a race against time, trying to solve seemingly random killings. Paul Chang, a Chinese-American homicide detective, is struggling to understand why these murders are taking place. Assisted by his neurotic partner, Nelson Rogers, Chang goes after the killer with logic, tenacity, and no small measure of fear.

Written from the perspectives of Detective Chang and Shamus Ryan, readers quickly find themselves seeing the world in unique—and often disturbing—ways they never expected. With dark humor and gritty suspense, Smith has crafted a refreshing and surprising thriller.

About the Author
J. Gregory Smith was born and raised in Washington, DC. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in English from Skidmore College, and his Masters in Business Administration from the College of William & Mary. A public relations professional in DC, Smith continued his work after moving to Delaware. He now writes full-time.

I'm done with this Big Sale, having already purchased, ummmm... too many books.

Can I please have NEXT Big Sale, please, Amazon?

I wonder if I'm the only person who feels this way... I'm hoping August has a sale, too...

I've bought six books from the Amazon Big deal sale for $14.36 and downloaded two free books from B&N this weekend. On to Borders.com, where thanks to the coming liquidation, there is another enormous ebook sale going on , (although it wasn't flagged in this forum). These Borders books are being sold through Kobo, fyi.
I think I'm going to blow through my $20 a month ebook limit this month.

Im sure the ebook is much cheaper and more portable. One reason I switched to ebooks was to conserve space. My pbook collection was huge and taking up way too much space in my closet.

I regret to inform you that your mobileread posting privileges have been revoked. Goodbye.

Spring-Heeled Jack, maybe in paperback. But the ebook is cheaper and more convenient (for me). Jonathan Strange, however, is over 1,000 pages in paperback. That's a deal-breaker for me.

200-350 pages -- paper? sure!
350-600 pages -- paper? eh, what's the cost difference?
600-800 pages -- ebook, unless I want to give it to my brother afterwards
800+ pages -- ebook no matter what

Queentess, you just convinced me not to buy the book at all.

It's rare that I think a book needed to be 1,000 pages long.

The committee has revisited it's decision and your privileges have been reinstated. In the future, remember that any mention of purchasing paper books on these forums is absurd, and you will be looked upon with disdain as required by the MR guidelines.
