I've had this problem twice, as well. The first time - I think - was the day after I bought it. The second time was today (about two weeks later).

I prefer to power down my Kobo to save on battery life. This time, I hadn't turned my Kobo on for about a week. I do not use an SD card, and so far have only picked up a few freebies and bought two books from the Kobo store. I haven't yet used it for anything else (I haven't even transferred the books I bought onto it yet, only the freebies have been transferred over). I don't use Calibre, nor have I used Adobe Digital Editions (yet, I will be because I will be checking out library books on it).

Eject doesn't work for me to disconnect. Nor does "Safely Remove Hardware". (I suspect the issues are connected.) I've only had it plugged into my computer a couple of times, and I think I shut down the computer altogether before unplugging it because I'm trying to be careful with it, and I don't know what else to do if Safely Remove doesn't work.

(btw, Safely Remove Hardware doesn't work for any device for me, anymore. Well, it hadn't for months until I plugged in my digital camera this past weekend - I hadn't plugged in my camera for months, either. I've tried going in to change it to Optimize for Removal instead of Optimize for Performance, but that won't work either because it's all greyed out!)

I don't know what to do...
Thanks for any help/suggestions!

PS: I keep thinking of more info I can add. I don't have wireless Internet at home, so I can't just bypass plugging in the Kobo to get around the "Safely Remove" issues I have with my computer. There was something else I thought I'd add as potentially helpful info, but I've forgotten it already.

When you say Eject / Safely Remove hardware don't work, can you be more specific?

How do you know they don't work?

What error messages are shown?

I don't recall, exactly, but with Safely Remove, it seems to think that the device is still accessing something.

It brings me to a window where I'm supposed to be able to stop it, but it still thinks it's accessing something. It even tells me this when everything is closed on my computer.

I don't remember about Eject - it may be that it just froze, but I can't recall exactly.

Oh, I remember what else I was going to add. It was fine when I looked at it a week ago, then it was powered off for that week and turned on again today (actually, I think it was closer to a week and a half), and that message came up right away when I turned it on. I know the other time it happened, it was just after turning it on, as well.

During that week and a half, I didn't have it plugged back into my computer in the meantime. It was just turned off. I didn't do anything with it.

Not sure if that's helpful or not, but I thought I should add that info.

OK, since I have so little on my Kobo so far, I'm going to go ahead and reset it. I will then be able to get those error messages that come with Eject and Safely Remove Hardware, and come back and post those here.

Ok, when I try to Eject (and I'm sure this has been the message every time):

"Eject Failed
There was a problem ejecting your ereader. Please try again"
And there's an OK button underneath.

I'll press OK, but I'm certain I'll get the same message. Ok, well the window just disappeared and it didn't appear to do anything after I hit ok. I can go "home" and try Eject again, but I can't imagine anything will be different. I'll try one more time, just in case.

2nd try: There is a long pause (there was the first time, too), with the little hourglass sitting there, and the same Error message.

(btw, with my having to set it all up again, I let it go ahead and sync so that my free books and the two I bought (all from the Kobo store) are now on my Kobo.)

Now, I'll see what exactly it says when I try to Safely Remove Hardware.

Right away, I got the window that says: "Select the Device you want to unplug or eject, and then click Stop. When Windows notifies you that it is safe to do so, unplug the device from your computer."

I click Stop.

I get a new window that is titled: Stop a Hardware Device
The message underneath says:
Windows will attempt to stop the following devices. After the devices are stopped they may be removed safely.

There are three options listed (I'm sure I've tried clicking on each of them in the past):
USB Mass Storage Device
Generic Volume F
Kobo eReader USB Device

This time I clicked "Kobo eReader USB Device"

And got the message:
The title of the message (in the blue band at the top of the error message - sorry, I don't know the terminology):
Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device

And the main part of the error message:
The device 'USB Mass Storage Device' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it.

Then there is the OK button. I hit OK.

I just tried the other two options (USB Mass Storage Device and Generic Volume F) and got the same message.

I do still have the Kobo Desktop open, so I will close that and try again (in case it's trying to access it).

Again, I tried all three, and got the same message every time. As far as I can tell, nothing should be accessing it. The only thing I currently have open at this time is this Firefox window so I can document exactly what's happening.

Is it helpful to know I am using Windows XP?
I'm going to sleep, so I'll have to check in again tomorrow (or Wednesday).
Thanks again.

Just fyi, I will shut down my computer before unplugging my Kobo. I don't know what else to do to unplug it when nothing else seems to work!

You will get this message if you have not closed the Windows Explorer window that opens when you connect the reader to your computer. So close any open Windows Explorer window showing the reader as a drive before you click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon.

If you want to dig down and see what might be holding it open, a tool called "Handle from Sysinternals can be useful.

It's used from a command prompt (under Vista and Windows 7 it has to be one with Administrator rights). Once the command prompt IS open type
Code:
Handle <drive letter of Kobo>:
and the output will show what processes have the Kobo open.

For instance, I currently have my Kobo attached as drive K and a Windows Explorer open to it.
Code:
C:\Tools>handle K:

Handle v3.46

On Windows 32-bit OSes, I use a tool called Unlocker
http://download.cnet.com/Unlocker/30...-10493998.html
It can tell you what is locking a specific file or drive by right-clicking, and also remove those locks (do that at your own risk of course).

On Windows 64-bin OS, it wouldn't run; but I found lockhuntersetup64.exe that puts a right-click menu item "What is locking this file". I Googled but can't remember where I downloaded it from. But you can easily find many sources by Googling. It will also let you remove the locks.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

I am a little busy this week, but will try some of these as soon as I have a little extra time to see if I can get my Safely Remove Hardware (and/or the Eject button) working for me.

Hopefully, this will then fix the error message on my Kobo.

Ok, its been eleven days and many downloads with no further problems (fingers crossed). I have adopted two measures; one, I always use the software to eject the device and wait an extra thirty seconds or so before disconnecting the USB cord and two, I always eject the device and then reconnect before opening a different software application. ( Kobo desktop, Adobe Digital Editions, calibre, etc.)

I am relatively confident (although my fingers remain crossed) that this is the last post I will need to make on this subject.

Unhappy

Well it finally happened to me. Its been two weeks since I've had my Kobo connected to my PC but even then it was only to charge it. Is there any solution for this? I don't use adequate or calibre. I have no clue what caused it to pop up out of the blue...

It happened to me, and I had purposely NOT connected it to a computer at all over the last week. Just been reading books / newspaper loaded via the WIFI directly from the kobo store.

I guess it's time to do what the others have done and buy a SDcard since the internal memory is 100% useless. Come on kobo, fix this or start to issue refunds, the advertised internal memory is nothing but a mess and VERY frustrating when you keep loosing books!
