The original K3 wifi. I really developed a hankering for the 3G though. So when the price came down, the urge was nearly irresistible.

Be sure to take advantage of the offers. I have the KSO WiFi and the savings from the offers have already paid for it twice over.

I love free Kindles

I concur. I suppose people just want to make a mountain out of a molehill. Particularly when it comes to a giant like Amazon, everyone wants to invent reasons to hate them.

We've gone from hating the very existence of DRM in any form, to arguing about which DRM is better? Really? Here's the answer: they all suck. But I guess they're here to stay.

Anyone who buys a DRMed ebook from any retailer can easily strip and convert it into the format of their choice. It's not an issue. No one's being 'locked-in' against their will.

And I can see the rebuttal - what about the people who aren't techie enough to know how to do that? Well, for them it's not a problem. Non-techie people will simply buy books from their respective retailers. Nook users will buy from B&N, Kobo users will buy from Kobo, and Kindle users will buy from Amazon. I don't think too many non-techies sit around fretting over 'Digital Rights Management'.

It took me a few minutes to upload the plug-ins for Calibre last night (I missed the go to the Calibre plug in part of the instructions) but all is right in my world once again.

Weird how wanting to read epubs with ease on a kindle is seen as some kind of confused obsession.
I believe amazon recently announced or even introduced support for library borrowing. Would the kindle defenders who dismiss epub as an irrelevant issue also have previously questioned why anybody would need to borrow from the library? (people still mainly use paper books from the library, after all; there are more audio books to borrow than ebooks and any mainstream priced mp3 player, not the cheapos at best buy, can play drm'd mp3 or wma, so why do you need kindle to support library adobe&overdrive ?).

I don't think they all suck. Commercial products need drm to increase profitability.

I only have a problem with drm when a program imposes drm on open license, free files. As, for example, sony used to do with their software. So if you had a free piece of music or talk or video and you wanted to load it on a sony device, you had to use their software, which would actually add drm to any file and limit how many devices it would load to. That sucked. Your own voice presentation and notes would be DRM'd from you.

Firstly, I don't see the connection in the comparison. They seem to be entirely different issues.

Second, I don't know about the others, but I'm not sure I can really be classified as a "kindle defender"*. As you can see on my profile to the left, I do not own an Amazon device. I am, however, a defender of common sense.

I disagree. I don't see any evidence that DRM is increasing profitability. Maybe certain retailers like Amazon would benefit from format limitations -- thereby making Kindle users' buying ebooks from Amazon the easier option, which encourages them to stick with Kindle store -- but the fact that it is DRMed isn't particularly advantageous to their bottom-line.

* Is it just me, or is there something wrong when such a term carries negative connotations?
