Glass
Although there are numerous reports of an all plastic display that will one day be available (and all of them touting flexibility), according to this article:
http://www.newsandtech.com/issues/20...5_scottish.htm Quote— “This is not a simple task, because conventional silicon-based electronics require processing temperatures that are too high for polymer sheets,” he said. “Hence, existing commercial displays are based on fragile glass substrates.” Here's another article that also states the difference between used materials being Flexible or not: http://members.forbes.com/global/2006/1225/071.html Quote—"That component is shipped to customers, who attach the panel to rigid glass back-panes or flexible plastic sheets to complete the electronic paper display." The substrate of the Sony is clearly NOT flexible. I can say outright and whether you believe it or not, this thing broke within the bounds of proper care. I may call Sony Repair again, because when they returned the device, they didn't return my receipt (I should have made a copy), but I really thought this was a no-brainer. When I speak to them, I'll ask what the substrate is. I find it difficult to believe that a small corner of this display, regardless of the substrate, would break. It would be extremely difficult to break without having structural stress already applied to it or somehow the product being inherently defective. The flex of the unit wouldn't break the corner of the glass. First, it's the Reader is not that flexible and second, any flex is going to twist across the center of the long axis's (the point at which it would bend the farthest). That would cause a crack from long edge to long edge. Bending the corner is not possible without causing all kinds of damage. A sudden impact would produce unpredictable damage, but you either believe me or don't believe me that the Reader didn't sustain undue force and there is nothing I can say to change that. I did ask the individuals I was speaking with (Sony Repair) and they said they are getting Readers back with broken screens but they were due to a drop. I reiterate to anybody who has one of these—be careful. If anybody has a broken Reader, please post the details. I'm interested in what manner it happened and a description of the break. I recall reading about an eInk device that was made in Europe and sounded very promising. I can't recall the name of the unit. I am considering selling the Reader I get back and buying one of those. |
