I voted not for several probably subjective reasons. Those being:
  • No web browser - I want a basic web browser at least with WiFi enabled devices, for Wikipedia, Gmail, etc.
  • No MP3 Function, when I think its great not having to have a separate iPod, when the book can act as an MP3 player. It fills me with geeky joys.
  • I don't like full-screen touchscreens in a device that large that is e-ink. It doesn't seem right and is too gimmicky for my liking. I will miss cover flow. Plus the interface delays would drive me mad, a la Kobo/Kobo Touch.
  • The battery is non-replaceable. Come on, surely you could extend the life of your clearly-short-to-be-lived device by a little bit?
  • Is there an SD/microSD card slot in it? If there isn't then I'll be disappointed.
  • Too expensive to justify another eReader, even if it is Pearl. Especially if I was to buy one and import it to Australia, it's just not economic value.
  • It's just plain ugly to me. This new reader has no tech allure like I normally get with things like uber-thin laptops, the iPad, 3DS and indeed my original NOOKclassic.
  • It probably won't be rooted for awhile. Not that there would be much point of a softroot on this thing anyway. But openness is good.

Along with all of this, I am also not keen on the NOOKbook lock-ins which I am sure to occur.

Honestly, if this is the best Barnes and Noble can do for a second-generation device, I am most definitely disappointed. I'm seriously considering skipping this generation of Simple Touch Reader, K3 and PRSx50 and going with a Kindle 4 when it comes out, whenever it comes out.
Just my opinion

The battery is replaceable and there is a slot in it. It takes cards up to 32 GB.

Maybe you would like to look at the TechSpecs.

It doesn't say anywhere that the battery is replaceable. Also, I've seen several articles (including threads on the official B&N NOOKboards) citing the fact that it's non-replaceable. Even a quick Google search will produce results.

If you had ever read any of my postings, you would have know that I was a strong supported of nook for a long time and I was equally down on the Kindle.

Too bad you don't know what you are talking about. Oh, I fixed your typos for you.

  3. The new screen is the same Pearl eInk screen as on the Kindle 3
  4. The new Nook is the same price as the Kindle 3 Wifi. The $114 you quote is the "Kindle with Special Offers", or the "get a discount for looking at ads" version. The girlfriend was fine with that so she bought a KSO. I'm not, so I preordered the nook touch.

As far as specs go, this is a significant upgrade from the nook classic. You're obviously welcome to dislike it, but it's worth looking at it on its own merits rather than automatically disqualifying it because of issues in older versions of the hardware.
I will be very pleased if the update solves the serious file problems, but, as you, I will wait and see.

The utilities allow me to move files onto collections using Windows without having to use the Kindle interface. Saved me a ton of time.

My current Nook also has what they say is an "eInk" screen so I also will have to wait and see if the new nook increases the contrast to that of the Kindle.

Good points.

Wait to see what Amazon brings out for Kindle updates. The blogbuzz seems to be that they have a touch E-Ink model on the way in addition to Android color tablets as with the NC. Those should put price pressure on B&N.

Frankly, I am happy with my Sony Daily (for E-Ink - liking my Archos 5 with reader apps from everybody for all-around pocketable/night use, although "battery bulge syndrome" has it offline for now ) that I got from eBay for $180, and it still seems superior on the basis of spec lists. Also, the PRS+ add-on hacks make it even better.

However, $99 for a "simple", lightweight, compact, fast touch ereader would seem to be a great value proposition, so be patient if you can

On the soapbox.

This is a sentiment I also share. There is so much negativity going on at these forums it is not funny. It seems that instead of giving good reasons to their positions and having an adult conversation, some people here think that the only way that they can make a point is too tear down the other guy or product. What happens then is that the posts become a game of who can diss the other product more. The average person on the board starts ignoring the thread and then, unfortunately, what could have been a good learning experience for some of us becomes a discussion of who can top that.

Off soapbox.

For the record, I will be purchasing the Nook 2 as soon as it is available.

Wow! If you are going out of your comfort zone on where you are purchasing it, I need to get down there and do the same. By the way, which cover did you get?

I love my Classic 3G Nook. To me the 3G is what makes the unit. Only having Wi-fi on all the new ones seems limiting.

It'll be interesting to see what their reaction will be if and when Amazon releases an all touch Kindle. Will it all of a sudden become "magical" and Amazon did it in way that is just pleasently different?

I want a Nook Touch with an audio player and speakers. It'll be called Kindle 4

I don't need 2 e-readers but if I could sell and get a decent price for my Nook Classic on Craig's List or eBay I would buy one. I like the touch screen and long battery life. After 2 replacements because of cracked bezels everything seems fine with my Nook Classic. The bezel on the 3rd one is an improved version.

I had 2 Nooks replaced because of cracked bezels. The second one was out of warranty but I talked them into replacing it anyway because it was an obvious design flaw. But I received both replacements in less than a week. I don't understand why they took 5 weeks to replace yours.
