The three students who were assigned to Great Britain told me that Germany bordered Great Britain. Then they argued with me when I returned their paper and they had been marked down. I pulled out a map and they still argued with me.

At first, I read "bordered" as "bothered." Which would be true, in the sense of 1066 & All That. But what kind of argument could they have with a map? That France didn't count? Well, okay, from an English perspective, but there's still the English Channel...

It is really, really sad what students don't know.

Not true. The problem with these students is, as Will Rogers observed, what they know that ain't so.

And most thought that Africa was one country and did not get the difference between a continent and a country.

See, now there's your problem. Consider drinking BEFORE grading. Everything will seem better that way, and you don't have to wait till you are through to start. If there's anyone entitled to be driven to drink by the job, it's a teacher...
