1662 – Birth of Queen Mary II of England.....and in 1938 of Larry Niven....

On this day in 1642, courtier, soldier, and gentleman-poet, Richard Lovelace presented the Kentish Petition to Parliament -- a Royalist document calling for the restoration of the rights of King Charles I -- and was promptly imprisoned for it. His confinement produced "To Althea, From Prison"; this has become one of the most anthologized of 17th century poems, known especially for the poster-famous lines in the last stanza:

Actually I missed the 60's having been born at the tail end of 1970. Great music in the 60's though.

Germany and Austria-Hungary are the first countries ever that introduce a summer time (Daylight Saving Time), Ireland will follow their example in the same year.

Today one of my friends died. She was only 50 and had married her high-school sweetheart in January. They separated in their 20s and he married someone else. As soon as he was divorced he searched and found her. They had one year together. Now she is gone. I never heard her say anything unkind about a fellow human being in the 20 years I had the privilege to know her.

Today is the 30th of April 2011 and funny little friend does not live anymore.

A few good friends are better than having an army of acquaintances. We cherish them.

Poppaea, my condolences. It's difficult to come to terms with something like that. I hope that you will find the strength to do so.

International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Massacre in Chicago, when, after an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at police as they dispersed a public meeting, Chicago police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight hour workday, killing several demonstrators and resulting in the deaths of several police officers, largely from friendly fire. In 1889, the first congress of the Second International, meeting in Paris for the centennial of the French Revolution and the Exposition Universelle, following a proposal by Raymond Lavigne, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests. May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International's second congress in 1891.

On this day in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped began serialization in Young Folks magazine. It was a huge hit; taken with his others from the previous three years (Treasure Island, A Child's Garden of Verses, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) it made Stevenson famous.
