Also interesting is that 'man' was originally not gender specific. It was short for 'human' and there were two kinds of humans:
- A wombed man or 'woman' - A weaponed man or 'wepman' But, over time, the 'wep' got dropped and 'wepman' became 'man'. Go figure |

A friend of ours here in London was pleased as punch to get a word "simples" into the dictionary - admittedly it hasn't made it into the OED though.
