Octavia Butler's _Parable of the Sower_ and it's companion, _Parable of the Talents_ are two of the best books I've ever read. Her Hugo winning short story _Bloodchild_ was my introduction to her oeuvre.

Sherri Tepper has written some good books, but _Grass_ is a masterpiece.

Ursula K le Guin has written some masterworks which have already been mentioned, however, her collection of four novellas titled _Four Ways to Forgiveness_ has so far been overlooked. I'm a huge fan of _The Dispossessed_ and _The Left Hand of Darkeness_, but _Four Ways.._ blew me away.

May I add:

Gloria Naylor wrote a book back in the 80's, called _Mama Day_. If it were written now it would totally be classified as urban fantasy. It takes place mostly on the barrier islands and there's some voodoo. All y'all should read it and get back to me about what you think. Be aware, it will probably break your heart.

Maybe not a literary titan, but I've found Scarlett Thomas's ~Popco~ and ~The End of Mr. Y~ to be enjoyable reads. I liked the overall geekiness to Popco and the subversive anti-corporation stance in places. I've read Y twice now and it's just an odd book that I can't quite describe. Maybe Science Fiction, Mystery and Literature all rolled into a bewildering story.
