"Windows" is still a registered trademark.

Back when Microsoft sued Lindows over their supposed misuse of it, they ran into some questions about whether Windows could actually be considered a trademark, since even MS had used the term "windows" to describe their products before settling on Windows as a name. I think they "settled" the issue by just buying the "Lindows" name, leaving the actual fight over the Windows trademark unsettled.

Indeed, the judge at the time was readying to take up the question of their trademark in total. which probably would have ended with them losing the mark altogether. Their use and protection of Windows since has been focused on "Microsoft Windows" and the style of the font and such, while limiting who is allowed to use it for advertising i.e. "Compatible with Microsoft Windows" etc
