Yea, that's how I did it, I just got it on Monday so I had only loaded one book on it. I've had no issues as of yet, seems to be working just fine. I got the new desktop application which seemed to download almost immediately after I got it loaded, the reader took a few tries by clicking Sync, but it finally did it with no issues. I like the device so far, just want to find a nice cover for it, I got the 2 year protection plan so I'm using the cover that comes with that, but I will get something nicer at some point.

Man, I must have the worst luck... I hit update/sync at least 200 times and nothing...
Statistically, if it's 5%, most normal people will get the update 1 out of 20 times. |

Got it today. I just went and downloaded the new version manually from www.kobobooks.com/desktop and it upgraded the kobo on the first try (after reconnecting).
1.9 still does not have the dictionary working for non-kobo epubs ![]() |

Desktop app's not really an option for me as I primarily spend the vast majority of my time in linux and only reboot to Windows for a few apps and games that just won't run goodly enough with wine and AFAICT the Kobo desktop app just doesn't play nicely with wine, presumably a USB setup problem(well hopefully), because I just might decide to monkey with getting it running tomorrow more. Well, that is presuming my gTablet custom fw downgrade goes w/o problems o.w. it could eat tomorrow's planned morning "free" time. I'd REALLY like to have the GOTO PAGE # function... too bad about the dictionary, they really should fix that as well. |

I think that's a deliberately disabled feature- they want certain things to only work on ebooks purchased from them in order to discourage purchasing from other places. I could be wrong, but it's a very plausible theory.

I caught heck some months back from a forum member for talking about the renderer, though what I was doing was repeating what was shared with us in the beta group. Kobo said they would have to make a switch happen to make the dictionary work with other books. Currently kepub books use the Kobo renderer and other books use the one by Adobe. There may be cost issues here--I honestly don't have a clue about that part.
I do think we can reasonably expect a better dictionary in 2.0 of the WiFi--one that will pick up plurals. FWIW--I am finding that the kepub books are much improved in 1.9. I have no problem using them and having the ePUB versions only for backup (and of course books bought elsewhere). |

Any clue yet as to when the Border's Kobos will begin to receive the updates?

Are Border's Kobos a different breed?
The secret seems to be installing the latest version of the Kobo desktop (v1.9), connecting your Kobo to the computer and hitting the 'Sync' button multiple times. |

I got the update (see Issues with Wifi 1.9 Update thread, #23) this afternoon, on a Kobo from Borders.com, but it probably took 30 Sync attempts over a couple weeks before the update bot noticed me.

What version of Border's desktop were you running when you received the update? Mine is still at 1.8. Just now I tried syncing a dozen or so times and no updates to the desktop or the reader were downloaded.

I'm wondering if it is worth trying the update again. I have 1.9 desktop here at work...

I'm still waiting for the update... I left WiFi on while it was charging the other day and not a thing showed up. In reality I'd prefer to have the update come while charging as I always hook up to power when flashing fw as fail fw flashes and electronics are generally an unrecoverable combo...

i.e. if Kobo did things intelligently with the WiFi the first thing it does once it gets on a network is check it's version # v. the current version # and offers an update if there's a newer one available. This is evidenced by the OOB experience with mine. There's not much point in WiFi if it can't also check for updates as well as shop... I've actually also had it go to the shop to see if that MIGHT trigger another fw version check(this is another good place for the fw to auto check versions), but still no offers. Anyways had wifi on again this morning for a bit, and still no update offer. Charging now as having the wifi on for a bit to check for update effectively pushed the batt down to the point where I need to recharge IF I should want to use it much later today. |
