"All" they need to do is put a simple e-reader into a tablet-sized monitor. Surely there would enough space for that in something like the current iPad. The rest of the hardware could be put in the keyboard/dock. In other words, the "tablet" would serve only as an e-reader + monitor (in connection, physically or wireless) with the dock. So docked you have a normal computer, where you can download stuff from the net and store it in the detachable e-reader/monitor, so you can read it offline. I'm sure Apple et al. have thought about this, and I expect it to happen. The only thing that's missing in the iPad 2 or Asus Transformer is the e-ink "mode" for reading.

Not sure how that'd work... e-ink isn't a mode, it is a physically different display mechanism to LCD so if you have a single screen then you can have e-ink or LCD. LCD trying to emulate e-ink is still LCD, not reflective and still therefore a power hog which is one of e-ink's main bonuses, low power usage...

Two completely different display modes on a tablet? I would very much doubt that would happen.
