My Reader works again!

It's unbelievable.

I tried to install the old firmware again. -> same error message

Then tried to install the new FW again (for the 10th time or so) -> works

But I think my Reader will never see a USB Cable again from now on.
I'll transfer all my books via Connect on a SD card.

What computer/OS are you using with your Reader? Have you tried a different computer in case your USB controller on your computer is maybe acting up? Don't forget to try a different cable.
