I don't mean to hijack this thread, but almost everything on this forum concerning Color Nooks talks about rooted ones, so I thought this might be a good place to ask about its other abilities out of the box.
I tried mine briefly before rooting it, and to be honest it wasn't that good for those purposes. It could do them, but not as well as after I rooted it.

It had no mail client, so all email went through the browser interface, and that just isn't that good. I personally wasn't that impressed by the NC's stock browser and jumped ship to Dolphin HD as soon as I'd rooted.

Without rooting it's primarily a reader - a decent one but still primarily a reader. With rooting it's a reading tablet - and a very good device.

Sorry I can't help you more - but maybe just letting you know why I didn't leave mine unrooted will help you decide for yours.

Good, basic question. Yes. The main attraction for me was backlighting but, since rooting, it's far more practical than the original. I can take notes in meetings, run my email, and lots of other task that make it more a tab than a reader. But for reading, using Aldiko, it's way better than stock. Of course I have difficult removing the DRM from some BN books to move them to Aldiko so I still use the stock reader but even then it's great. No complaints at all.

I have to agree with Lemurion.

I bought a Nook Color on the ebay special..decided to give it a few weeks with the stock software before rooting.

I don't like reading books on it at all...I tried. The interface isn't great and I found the screen hard on my eyes. But I don't like long reading on my computer screen in general. I will stick with my e-ink readers for that. I think it would be great for kids books that rely on pictures.

While the browser works fine for a quick lookup, it's not something I would do a lot of surfing on and it's easier to get my emails on my phone. I signed up for my newspaper and a couple of magazines. I didn't like the newspaper and the jury is still out on the magazines. At first glance, I don't like the navigation to get to what I want but it may be just me getting used to/learning the tricks of the interface. I find skipping through the advertisements and constantly having to zoom on text very disruptive.

I think the real telling factor is that I am forcing myself to spend time on it...unusual for a new toy/gadget.

Unless B&N comes out with a much improved interface this month that opens up the functionality I need this month, I plan to root (just waiting for the official version of HC to become available for it). Despite it's software limitations, I love the hardware...so have no regrets because of the ability to easily root it.

Aldiko does read B&N books. When you try to open/import a book it will prompt you for username and password. You enter your credit card number and full name that's tied to your B&N account. You should only have to do it once.

For what it's worth, I've read several books on my NC and I haven't had any problems with the screen (though I haven't read any using the default app). Of course I read lots of books on various LCD devices before I got an EInk device and while I do prefer the Sony's EInk screen for sustained reading, the NC is getting more use because of the other features, and I'm not getting much opportunity for sustained reading anyway.
