oh joy, that makes my nipples hard...

Still it's a nice hardware spec yet nothing impressive other than it's thinner. It's not just Apple but really, much like our ereading devices I am very underwhelmed. If I was in the market for an Apple device I would be happy I waited for the iPad 2 just because after handling the iPad 1 I think thinner and lighter is better in this case.

It's an evolutionary change, I agree, not a revolutionary one, but still changes that are worth having. It's pretty much in line with what was being reported in advance.

I'm sure that it will make an already successful product even more successful.

Device: iPad, iPhone, K3 & Amazon - between them they cover my needs.
And just in case the thinner, lighter, faster with a fancy new cover doesn't impress, the original iPad's have had a price cut, now down to £329 (UKP) - clicky - probably just 'whilst stock lasts' but even so might be worth a punt for anyone who's not sure a tablet's right for them...

Edit - Belle's a faster typist than I am, lol!

Yup,. that's what I thought I wrote. Nice changes but I don't see a really compelling reason to get on if you already have a iPad 1. However is you do have an iPad 1 I'm not sure the iPad 2 will make the person happier because the speed of the iPad 1 seems fine, for now running the current version of iOS. That said, the next iteration of iOS might well need the extra horsepower under the hood. Nobody knows.

But as I pointed out none of the current devices really blow-my-skirt-up. It's not the fault of the device makers or anything as it takes time to build a new platform, it's OS as well as for developers to get creative (really there are only a handful of iOS apps that are actually more than a curiosity. Then again I don't need fancy media players, games or a lot of video support. It's going to be an interesting year and if someone were to ask my advice I would say that for other than enthusiasts like yourself there is nothing that compelling in anything, yet. Let it mature a little while longer.

And until the content issue around iTunes the only people I would say should spend on an iOS device are those who will not use any other platform in the future. And with Jobs' heath the issue I might even hedge that a bit as well.

Agree, if a person could get a wifi iPad 1 for about $350-$400 it's likely to be a bad device but just how fast is Apple going to turn it into a coaster or "snack tray" with their new versions of iOS?

I must respectfully disagree. I use MP3 for music and MPEG4 for movies on my iPad and iPhone - both formats which can happily be read on pretty much any device.

But no one else makes a WiFi only pocket computer. Android's late to the game.

That's my feeling as a current iPad1 owner. If I was buying from scratch then clearly the iPad2 would be better, but there isn't anything there that interests me enough to consider upgrading. If the rumours of a retina display had come to pass, that would have been a different story, but this is a pretty normal product refresh, rather than the jump that the iTouch had from 3 to 4.

There is, but I'm referring to a pocket device. Samsung has a wifi version of their Galaxy S smartphone in the works, but it won't be available until later this year.

Meanwhile, Apple still stands unchallenged in this segment of the market; like they've done for the last 3-1/2 years.

A wifi-only smartphone... Yeah, how can it go wrong?

If you think the stripped-down-smartphone market is any worth, yeah, it'll remain unchallenged for quite some time.

Well, the new iPad looks quite nice. Too bad you need iTunes and there is no Flash. Maybe someone can hack it to run Honeycomb some day?
