The one in our town is apparently safe. It's also about one mile from a Barnes and Noble.

Meanwhile, the Borders about 12 miles from here (towards NYC on a major highway with no bookstore competitors nearby) is closing.

I suspect that while the general proximity of B&N and Borders stores might be part of the reason both are having trouble, that the decision on which stores to close is based on how well the individual stores are doing. There can be a lot of factors involved in that. Number of customers, how expensive the retail space is, etc.

The local Borders here is closing. It's in a tucked away location anyway in a strip mall kind of thing. The local B&N nearby to Borders attached to the HUGE Mall here seems to be doing really well though. I'm glad for that as I prefer B&N anyway, still it's a shame to see a bookstore close.

They lied. We have a Waldenbooks, they announced a few days ago that they are closing. They're selling out all their stock and wasting no time.

What's weird is, it's our only bookstore for like 30 miles, maybe more. I guess you could call the little indie coffee shop thing a bookstore because they sell some books, but they don't really sell a lot. So I can't see how they were doing bad. I hardly bought anything there because the prices were outrageous, but they always seemed to have people in it.

Yes, I suspect we will see an internet site with the Borders Logo before long. In this case that would be ironic since their lack of serious presence on the internet was a major cause of why they went under. You need that 'ePresence' to survive anymore. And before they understood that, it was too late for them.

I expect a Circuit City type ending more than I do a Kmart/Sears ending.

I wonder how long it will be before this starts impacting overseas operations. No listing for Australia closures as yet.

What killed my borders was poor selection, inability to locate book types (genre) in the store and a location that was hard to get in and out of. No one that I know ever went there due to these limitations.

They've already updated their Store Locator - both of the Columbus Borders stores are closing, and it says so on their website.

It does look like the Borders franchise in Australia will be protected. How long one only wonders but it seems Borders will live on down under for a while yet.

For me, on-line book shopping won't replace spending time in a bookstore (one of my favorite places to go).

Isn't Borders in Australia a completely different company?

Borders Australia is not the same company as Borders in the US, but in some sort of bizarre coincidence (or not) Borders Australia has today been placed into administration (roughly, the Australian version of filing for chapter 11).

This also effects Angus & Robertson, a bookstore chain owned by the same company as Borders Australia that opened it's first store in 1884 in Sydney.

Really?

Crikey, that is contrary to what has been said recently (Bookbee) but not entirely unexpected.
