Seems fine. None of my books have page number support and I won't be using the public notes or before you go feature so 3.1 hasn't really done that much for me in terms of new features

Just poking around to see what else they've changed and how to reenable the jailbreak + hacks for everybody else. I've still got full access to this Kindle so its not a major thing for myself...

Yes. 3.1 only came out yesterday and its in Early Preview. It won't change to release for a few weeks if it ever does change.

Sherlock Holmes - The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge is a free book that has support for page numbers. What is odd is that it lists "Print Length: 68 pages" on the Amazon.com page but the Kindle has it as 31 pages. This may just be a side effect of "This book was converted from its physical edition to the digital format by a community of volunteers."

It seems like Calibre eventually would be able to create an .APNX file that the kindle could read. I've looked into the guts of ePub books (using Calibre) and some books have tags in the HTML that indicate real page numbers. If you are converting ePub to mobi, then it seems like Calibre could look at the ePub and create an .APNX file to provide us with page numbers. But regular ol' mobi files bought/downloaded from somewhere else probably won't be able to show page numbers on kindle.

Jeez - I just looked at my documents folder. For a free book I just "bought" (Admit One - My life in film), I see FOUR files:

.apnx - the page numbers?
.azw - the book file
.ea - ???
.mbp - we saw this appear after public/shared highlights, right?

But interestingly, I'm not seeing page number on this book. I guess the kindle makes that apnx file for all books, regardless of whether page numbers are available?

EDIT -

And Duma Key, which I'm reading, I bought from Amazon, and has page numbers, has SIX files:

apnx
azw
ea
eal
mbp
phl

Anyone know what all this junk is??

.mbp has always been there -- it's the last page read file.

.phl, I think, is the file where popular highlights are stored.

.apnx has to do with the page numbers.

.ea and .eal -- I would guess those have something to do with the new stuff at the end of a book, but I'm really not sure.

Yes, Kevin, I downloaded it with success on both my Kindles. Was a big file though and Kindle restarted twice as it should.
I had hoped I could log in on the mobile version of Mobile Read after the update, but no, no way .

Yes, d/l UK version earlier today, took a few seconds (I am on BT Infinity...), installed in minutes. However, I have just tried again now, and it's not moving, so there is something wrong their end, I suggest.

As quick as it was, it took less time to review all the new features, mind you...

I bet you're right. Google Books shows that ISBN to have 31 pages as well.

Remember there won't be page numbers at the beginning and end sections, where paper books use roman numerals.

They should start showing when you're past those and into the start of the text.

OH! You're right! The books starts at the Introduction (at 2%) and there are no page numbers there. I'm not in the front matter, yet no page numbers (and not in the prologue, either), but when I get to chapter 1 it starts saying page 1. It's a shame they don't have the roman numerals. It will make it hard to cite the prologue and intro (I'm referring to the free book Admit One, which I didn't think had page numbers).
