Thanks to my bro, I now have Root Explorer. Now for the Gingerbread keyboard...if that's not good enough, I can always do a little digging up to enable one

So, after messing around a bit myself, I managed to mess things up so that I didn't have any keyboard.
I re-rooted (I was thinking of doing it anyway to clean things up) and I have exactly the same problem. GingerBread KB is a choice, but it does nothing.
I installed a sample of slideIt and that won't run either (I do have my regular - multitouch - keyboard).

I tried the:
mv LatinIME.apk LatinIME.apk.bak
fix described at http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Replac...fault_Keyboard
but that left me with no keyboard (fortunately I was able to reverse the above step which restored the basic keyboard.

I'm attaching a list of the system/app and data/app and data/data directories in case anyone has any suggestions. I'm now quite willing to buy root explorer, but I don't see that it will solve my problem as the file appears to already be in the right place.

Does everyone else using Autonooter have the same problem? I would think so since that's how it was immediately after I rooted.

I don't want to buy Ultra Keyboard because I'm guessing I'll have the same problem.
Any further suggestions?

If not, I may just stick with this keyboard until the a version of autonooter corrects it.

Thanks to Scion and =X= for their efforts!

From the posts that I have seen people had the same issue as you. They solved it by going to the NOOKcolor Tools app and selecting the keyboard there. Not understanding why this isn't working.

Right. You may have done this already, but when I installed Ultra Keyboard I'm not sure what I did other than non rebooting during a step when I was supposed to reboot. So I ended up having to "install" using Root Explorer twice before it worked.

I got swiftkeys working on my Nook. I really like it.

How'd you get it to work. I installed SwiftKeys trial but can't get it working.
I have a rooted color nook and no matter what I do, my only choices are multi-touch and GingerBread, but GingerBread does nothing.

The keyboard needs to be in /system/app to be able to choose a keyboard. If it's in that directory, what are the permissions for the file? Sometimes I have to change the permissions to get the keyboards to work. Today I installed Ultra, but had to change the permissions, then reboot.

Edit: I also had a copy of the file in /data/app that I had to delete.

Risking all (or $4 anyway), I bought root explorer.
I moved SmartKeyboard (trial) into /system/app and amazingly, it works!
Did the same for SwiftKey trial and SlideIt demo.
They all seem to work.
Still can't get Gingerbread to work though, but I don't really care.

And now for the piece de resistance:
I deleted the GingerBread.apk file from /system/app using root explorer

then did adb install on the gbkb-en/apk file, (now it actually installed since I was able to delete the file).
then moved the net.thinkindifferent.inputmethod.latin file from data/app to system/app

and voila the GingerBread keyboard actually works!

Thanks for all the hints above that and
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Replac...fault_Keyboard
got me to the solution.

PS: I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing or just did! :;

Yep, sometimes it's just trial and error.

I'm unable to move my keyboards from data/app to/ system/app because "cannot paste here because file system is read only". What do I have to do? Sing it Frank Sinatra?
