Here's a good reason to be able to employ DeDRM tools: over the holidays, both my daughter and I acquired Kindle 3s. Also, I received a gift which when returned, resulted in a gift card to Borders. My daughter received a gift card to B&N.

Hmm.. what to do with B&N and Borders gift cards and two Kindles? I know! Let's buy ebooks and read them on our Kindles!

And so we did, thanks to DeDRM software.

I have a gorgeous cherry wood library in my home. I keep a few thousand books of my favorite authors Wilbur Smith, James Patterson, Jeffrey Archer etc. Many of these books I bought second hand but I did purchase all of them. My mother and husband live with me and I actually allow them to read the books in my library!

Between us we now own 2 Nooks, a Sony-300 and two devices that don't work anymore my iRex and Sony 505. I continue to purchase books but they are now all eBooks. Without removing the DRM I could no longer share my books in my own home. I know that technically this is wrong but I really don't care. My Calibre library is simply my modern version of my physical cherry wood library. The chances of two of us reading the same book at the same point in time is slim so I can easily justify removing the DRM. I just wish that I didn't have to do something that actually makes me feel bad - but not bad enough to stop.

I wish DRM would just go away.

I find this all very interesting. Having just received my first device for Christmas, a Sony PRS-650, I joined this forum to talk with others who have e readers, as well as to find out some information on this very subject. Having searched the Internet I came across a book by one of my favourite authors that was only available in Kindle format, nowhere else. Of course I wanted it, so I started searching the net to see if it were possible to read it on my Sony. Luckily this forum pointed me in the right direction to find my answer. Now I have purchased that book, which is for my use only, no one else's, and I can now read it on my Sony. I've also purchased a few others books, and as long as I am able to read them on my Sony, I will continue to purchase books. So in my case, being able to remove the DRM has resulted in me purchasing books where I wouldn't have if it were not possible.

Q.E.D.

Here's hoping the publishers/distributors will get the message sooner rather than later.

I first used it so I could read mobipocket books on another reader, then I needed to convert them to epub. But all so I get to keep a copy of the book when book seller remove them and the format is better.

I just started using it and I am happy that I have. I don't think Amazon is going any where any time soon but I like the security of knowing that if something were to happen I can move my library with me.

I also like knowing that when the time comes for a new e-reader, I can easily move my entire library if I find a device that suits me better then a Kindle.

I was caught out by the Agency 5 issues several months ago, when I lost 3/4 of my purchased ebooks at Diesel due to new and shiny geographic restriction impositions.

Luckily I did have back ups, but still lost those purchases regardless. (Diesel did compensate though)

As such when I buy an ebook, removal of DRM is the first action I undertake after purchase. I will not be tied via DRM to any one ebook store now.

I also buy a lot of DRM free ebooks from Baen and Smashwords.

More like putting a lock on the front door in an attempt to keep the home owner from stealing their own furniture. In other words, it's just stupid.

Amen! I'm in the camp of "remove it as soon as I purchase so I can move my library with me." As my needs grow and change, so will my ebook format needs and preferences. Publishers either don't understand this, or more likely, don't want to. And I keep my books. They're not disposable, to me. I never ever delete a book after I read it, and I re-read lots, too. I want to be able to access those files (and darn it, I PAID for it, I had better be able to access it!) anytime I want on any device I choose to use.

I've just noticed that a book I bought in 2008 (and haven't read yet!) is no longer available from the place I bought it, as the shop has closed (the HarperCollins ebook store).

If I hadn't been able to remove the DRM, I'd now be at the mercy of Adobe's next DRM server upgrade. (They have previously turned off older DRM servers, leaving DRMed content inaccessible for anyone who didn't spot the notice and migrate their DRMed content manually to use the new server in a nine-month window of opportunity.)
