I don't know that it was that funny. :snif: But yes.

I think it all depends on the persons reading preferences.
Most people across North America (US and Canada) will tend to stick with North American authors simply because the style of writing tends to be much easier to read and comprehend, whereas a British or Australian style of writing may use phrases or certain wording that may not make very much sense to the readers not familiar with them.

As an American, we tend to prefer our items or reading material somewhere along these lines (and this is only a vague generality, each person has their own preferences):

Highly preferred: American authors
authors from their home or current state
North American Authors (possibly from or in Canada or Mexico)
European authors
Least preferred: international authors not mentioned above

Again this is only a generality, some readers may have a preference for international/foreign reading above all else, some may stick with mostly local (city, county, or local region of several hundred miles/km within the state/province) type authors. Others (like myself) will tend to stick with a specific genre regardless of where it is written.

My personal preference is sci-fi written by US/Canadian authors, Asimov is one of my favorites (granted he was born in Russia, he came to the US when he was 3 so therefore is an American author).

If it's in English and I like it I'll read it.

Well said. Me, too. And I'd read it in another language if I weren't so grossly undereducated when it comes to languages!

For myself, I only pay attention if the book is a mystery, for some reason, though it is more about the setting than the author's personal history. I still read mysteries by authors about other areas/countries, but books from authors like Tony Hillerman (Arizona and New Mexico) and Raymond Chandler (yes, I know he was born in Britain, but his books are notably based in Los Angeles and surrounding areas of SoCal), or for a living example there is Connie Shelton whose books are based in Albuquerque, just allow me to immerse myself that much more by taking me back to familiar places.
