book designer update for sony reader probs solved

hi everyone
there is a new book designer update that seems to solve sony reader book maker problems its dated 7/20/2007 i have attached it to this post

to install
(1) turn your account user control on
(2) drag new update over your original file (it can now be in your c:\program files folder now with this update)
(3) restart your machine
(4)start book designer

thats it

i have been trying for ages to sort this out the other updates either wouldnt let me make a book or it would give me an error messege plus i couldn't put covers on my sony reader files since i installed vista but now it works great no probs at all

hope this helps

Thank you for your helpful info, but the update was not attached to your message. Please don't fix it as I already have a thread for Book Designer updates. Please see the following thread for the update.

How did you go about installing Book Designer under Vista (one hell of a crappy OS)?

<sigh>

Vista is not a "crappy" O/S. What it is is a very different O/S to XP.

There have always been "rules" for writing Windows applications which it's been a good idea to follow. Prior to Vista, you could get away with "breaking" a lot of these rules. Vista forces you to follow them, or your application doesn't work.

Follow the rules, and apps work fine. 10 year old versions of my own software, for example, run flawlessly under Vista.

Eg, BD - by default at least - writes data to its own folder (or sub-folders of its own folder). That's always been something which is strictly a "no no" (it would always have broken a network installation, for example). There is a function call which a program should make to return the name of the folder in which it should store data.

Write your software professionally and correctly, and Vista is absolutely not a problem.

BD works with Vista for some and not others. The question is why. Why is that? What is it that has to be done to get BD to work with Vista? Other then not install under Program files that is.

Try uninstalling BD and reinstalling but NOT under Program Files. It may be an issue with the access to Program Files. BD writes temp data to subdirectories under the main directory and if you don't have access to write there, it won't work properly.

One potential issue is that BD uses a dynamic HTML editor control which is not supplied as a standard part of Vista. BD won't run without it, but it would run if another application had installed this control, for example.

Also under Vista (as HarryT said) you may need the dynamic HTML stuff that's part of XP but not part of Vista. You can get it here to install to try to get BD to work...

HAD the same problem with Vista Ultimate 32. Tried everything that was suggested by this forum and the russian forum (bylingual). Finally, looks like I found something. Everyone, correct me if I'm wrong, who has non-functioning parser, has the User Control - OFF! I turned mine ON, rebooted and everything works like a charm now. This is not the only app that is affected by the presence of this annoing service. It looks like Vista with User Control OFF sets all account to guests or something like it (not a programmer), which affect every app (aim, nero etc) which need special priveleges. Those savvy in programming, please check it, if possible.
