Okay, okay. I'll be good now.

So now 1.7.5 is out already?
It'd be really cool if there was someplace (like in a sticky?) where it was announced when new firmware comes out. I hardly use my wireless otherwise, only to collect updates; it'd be great to know when it's worthwhile connecting to get a new one.

The latest desktop is 1.7.5, and reader firmware is 1.7.4. The desktop should prompt you to upgrade the reader if you use it to sync, or the reader will when it receives a notice from the server to upgrade.

OK so how does the Kobo ereader update to 1.7.4 firmware?
I just checked and my original Kobo is running 1.4 dated June 2010. I never use the Desktop App as I much prefer ADE or Calibre.
How will my reader receive a notice from the server to upgrade?

There are 2 kobo versions. For the original, 1.4 is still the latest firmware.

I Went to KOKO.com and see nothing on firmware download

BORDERS desktop app says MY Kobo's wrong version to sync with their KOBO desktop app.

Yodar: Kobo WiFi has different firmware than Kobo-O. If you have the original Kobo, it needs to be running firmware 1.4 to use the latest desktop. You may want to ask Borders about this. FWIW, when Kobo firmware 1.8 is released for the original Kobo, it will be able to update from 1.0 or 1.4 to 1.8.

So in other words if you have the older, non-WIFI model, there's no benefit to installing this upgrade?

This update is only for the WiFi firmware. Updates to the desktop are different--though have similar numbering.

Thanks for that - no wonder my Kobo doesn't have 1.7.4!

But when the new firmware for the original Kobo is available will there be a way to get it if I don't use the Kobo Desktop App?

Is this safe? It looks like my LG Eve phone charger will do the job, but I am afraid I will fry my Kobo if I use it...

There have been a few discussions about this in earlier threads, and I don't remember the science--but I do remember the answer. Yes, it's safe.

@ pokee ... I have used my Samsung camera wall charger several times to charke my orginal Kobo running v1.4 without any incidents.

As Vicki/taming says it's safe

I have noooooo idea of the science, but I remember Michael Tamling from Kobo telling us it's perfectly safe to use other USB-type wall chargers instead of connecting to computer.
