Mobipocket new release (with iLiad support) on May 3rd

Not working for me either. I've done all I know to do and nothing (rebooted both devices multiple times, checked for latest updates, manually checked its is build 580). You click on install new device and all I get is the pop up dialog reminding me I need to plug in the device. Yet the iLiad shows up as drive E: no problem.

Seems they should have kept working on it longer.

That is all mobipocket I believe, but according to iRex, it will display ;txt;TXT too, better then ipdf

Not working for me either.

I have Windows XP and Mobipocket didn't recognise my iLiad until I changed the settings on my firewall to allow Mobipocket Internet access.


No problems after that.

What a disappointment... who on earth could be responsible for the idea of providing Dracula and Crime and Punishment as demonstration works? Anything less suitable to show off an e-reading device I can't imagine. Short stories by one or more well-known authors, or a well-known (but shortish) novel would have been ideal. (Some of the Saki short stories, perhaps, or the Dickens Uncommercial Traveller essays, or possibly even something by Edgar Wallace.)

In the absence of anything such, can anyone recommend a well-produced Mobipocket book (free or commercial)? Something that shows off the reader to an advantage? I've waded through some dozen free books from their site, but seen nothing that makes me want to give away a Mobipocket book as a present.

You might try the Baen Free Library. They offer their stuff in a "Palm/Mobipocket" format. I haven't used the Mobi, so I cannot comment on how well done the conversions are, but the RTF's I've used have all been of excellent quality.

The stuff in the Library is, as the name proclaims, free, and if you like what you read, they offer more for sale (sans DRM) at very reasonable prices.

The .pdb files it supports are PalmDoc (ApportisDoc). Some files advertized as MobiPocket are actually ApportisDoc, or at least they are identified in their header as ApportisDoc. The Linux file command will tell you if a .pdb (or .prc) is ApportisDoc or not - but it just looks at the header. There are other e-book formats that use the .pdb file type. FBReader will also read Plucker .pdb files (as well as ApportisDoc and unencrypted MobiPocket), but there are other .pdb e-books that neither FBReader or MobiPocket will read.

Try http://www.memoware.com/ for free stuff. Fictionwise has decently formatted .pdf books. Haven't tried any of the ones there in the Mobipocket format yet. Hard to say if the publisher does the Mobipocket formating or if Fictionwise does it with publisher approval.

OK since the reader is still not working for me I decided to by pass it.

There is a file called "Mobipocket_PID.txt" in the root of your internal memory device.

The Mobipocket PID of your iLiad is "Y3IGFLMSDF".
You don't need to do anything if you send books
to your iLiad with the Mobipocket Desktop Reader.
Else please add this PID to your online account
before downloading a Mobipocket eBook and copying it to the iLiad.

I used the PID to register my iLiad into my http://www.mobipocket.com account.

Interestingly? They don't have a drop down to select iRex iLiad! You just have to settle for "Other".

I then downloaded my library and got .prc files.

I copied those to /mnt/free/books/Mobipocket

Back to contentLister and I was able to view my ebooks.

The cover art though is showing up as a tiny little thumbnail in the upper left corner of an otherwise very empty screen. Anyone else seeing this?

My first DOA iLiad came with Crime and Punishment already on it (placed there by iDS according to the tags). Which I've always thought meant my first DOA unit was a used unit since none of the other two replacement units came with pre-installed content.

So you could say that crime and punishment have been on iRex's mind for awhile now.

Their paid for content is available as .prc files as well. I grabbed a couple off my bookshelf and fed them to the iLiad. They work, same shrunk cover art work, but they work.

One curious thing though. Whilst the .prc files from Mobipocket.com display in the contentList sans .prc, the Baen files show with the .prc in the title.

If you like science fiction, there is now content that is only available on-line or as e-books. Two examples are edited by Eric Flint: Jim Baen's Universe and Grantville Gazette. They are available on-line or via subscription, or as individual issues from websubscriptions. Note that Grantville Gazette has been upgraded starting with issue 11. It now has many color illustrations, as does the Universe. The MobiPocket version (e.g. from websubscriptions) is very good. When you subscribe or buy an issue you can download as many e-book formats as you want.

Yep, 52 ebooks in one fell $14.95 swoop! You can read one a week for a year! "What are we having for dinner next week dear" "Let's see, I think the 'Best of Tamil Cooking' is on schedule for next week dear." At these prices you have to ask how we can't afford to DRM them!

So far the book store has been more entertaining than any of the ebooks I bought...

Oh wait, it gets better, gotta love the French!

The shrunk image is due to the fact that these books are optimized for PDAs. also Palms are limited to 64K images.
Baen patches the Mobipocket books a bit which may cause the issues with the title/file name shown.
