My personal favorite Clarke novel has always been "The Songs of Distant Earth"...but I'm not sure I can tell you why.

I'm not sure about what the OP means with "significant". But, if I use the adjective with the meaning of "it has something to say", then I'd erase Terry Brooks from the list.

I'd rather add Reynold's Revelation Space and Heinlein's Universe, if they fit in the dates.
