That's not been my experience. There are some free books on Amazon that have no DRM, but for books with DRM, the samples I've downloaded have had DRM, and in all cases I've tried, it was the same DRM (amazon has a couple different DRMs depening on MOBI or topaz format).

Same here. For whatever reason, whenever I turn off my kindle while it is on a page from Bill Bryon's new book, I have to do a hard reset. If I go to the menu screen, I have no problems. But If I leave in the middle of the book it freezes.

Annoying.

That wasn't true as of a couple of months ago... I transferred all my samples from my K2 to the K3, which wouldn't have worked if they had DRM. Though maybe it's changed since.

I download samples all the time, then change the file extension from .azw to .mobi, and open them in Mobipocket Creator. No DRM. I don't want Topaz books, so I never even look at a sample of those.

The only one of these that bothers me is the inability to turn off the progress bar at the bottom. Mostly I like knowing how far along the book I am but I have a bunch of books in pdf format and I seem to loose about a line per page under the progress bar. I can bump up the font size and turn the kindle sideways but then I am turning pages 3 times as often and the buttons at the bottom don't work as well with how I hold the thing. I wish fit to page was just that little bit more accurate. Sometimes a line can be quite important to the point being made.

How do you know if it's a Topaz book or not before you download?

There is DRM on mobi samples, to the extent that Kindles will not allow you to annotate/highlight. Obviously if MC can open them, anything probably can (calibre viewer, other Kindles, mobipocket reader, etc.).

Topaz samples have full DRM, again with the no-annotation restriction.

The no-annotation restriction might have nothing to do with DRM per se, just a behavior enforced by Kindles when the 'sample' bit is set.

I'm not surprised.

The majority of Kindle readers get most or all of their stuff from Amazon. They wouldn't know an .epub from a .txt from a .mobi.

Nor do they need to.

lack of epub support is probably the biggest concern for me...
Of course, it's not really a concern, either, since I can convert them fine.
The progress bar can be annoying, too.

A lot of this seems to be nitpicking... And obsolete, since there are apps being released for it now.
