In those cases, we had to use the Sony (or PSP) barrel-connector A/C adapter that provided about 2 A (2000 mA). Sounds like your husband will test this on his Sony.
I occasionally let my 505 discharge to that level (when I'm reading paper books), so I've had to deal with it a number of times. You don't _have_ to use an A/C adapter to revive it. I think what happens when the charge gets so low that the device can't even boot up is that USB charging reverts to a safe, low current so as not to harm the unknown device. It takes a _long_ time to charge using such a low current. What I do instead is to leave it charge like that for about half an hour, unplug it and let it boot up, and then plug the USB back in at that point. Being alive, the reader can request a higher current and charge at its normal rate.

Indexing takes a lot of power, so if you have a lot of books on the reader, you may have to leave it longer than half and hour the first time.

Today I had to replace my lost mobile phone - it was a few years old, so I consoled myself that perhaps the battery didn't have that many charges left. I was less excited by the new phone itself (LG Rumor Touch), than whether the charger would work for my PRS-650. My reader was still at 4 bars, but seeking instant gratification, I plugged in the Sony, and then the charger to the socket (mains). The red charging light came on, and I can access the device contents (as opposed to USB charging) with no "error messages" ... that's good, right?

Which is another reason to use an AC charger... it can index and charge at the same time... if it needs to do a lot of indexing then you can lose half your power (or even more) before being able to read.

I agree that having an A/C adapter is better. I was just pointing out that it isn't absolutely necessary. I've got by for two years without one for my 505, with multiple full discharges in that time. It helps that I keep my books on an SD card that I can remove during the initial low-power boot-up.

Good info to add to our collective knowledge, thanks.

I have a Griffin USB wall charger I use to change my Sansa MP3 players, but it didn't work with my PRS650. The specs on this say it is 5v, 1000mA.

Neither did my Belkin USB car charger - the PRS650 saw it as USB, but didn't kick over to charge mode. This one is labeled 5v, 1A output with a 12v input. The cig lighter port I had it plugged into would have been putting out a little over 12v, because that's what motorcycles do, but I wouldn't think that would matter.

The USB port on the Alpine stereo in my truck didn't even look like USB to it, it was like it wasn't plugged in at all. I have no idea what specs that port puts out, but the stereo was on so you'd think it was live.

If the chargers for the Kindle 3 work, maybe this one will do the trick: http://www.amazon.com/CrazyOnDigital.../dp/B004165BIU

I'll order it and see.
