(One thing I do recall from the movie-- a scene where Ayla is looking at her reflection in the pond, contemplating how "ugly" she is-- she turns away quickly while running away from herself, her short "dress" flies up, and-- uh, the costume is authentic in the lack of undies. And let's just say that Darryl Hannah does a very short but explicit moment of "presenting"...) (That sound you hear is the male members of the forum quickly clicking over to Netflix.) |

I read the first four books when I was 18-19(? - thereabout), and I honestly can't remember there were that much sex in them or that it was all that explicit

Grace, anthropological work done years ago found that primitive hunter/gather tribes worked about 15 hours a week, on average. Long work days are a requirement of civilization. |

Ardeegee, you must have been one of the 2 dozen people or so who saw this movie! Just kidding, but it wasn't a good movie. If they wanted to do it right they would have to make the clan look more clanish, instead of just badly groomed homo sapiens.
I must admit I was thinking more like the finger in the hole of the other hand for the signal... |

That signal was my first thought for the modern day cro-magnum man... I am not sure I realized there was a movie, but I do picture Daryl Hannah when I think of Ayla so I must have known. |

The sex in the first book isn't written for titillation. The sex starts about 1/3 of the way through the second book. After that point, I remember lots of sex through book three. I don't think I ever got past the third book in the series. |

That might be it. It's just fascinating how it seems to have caught the attention of readers though.

I've read all the books and even saw the movie. The series was interesting but the Plains of Passage was sooooo long I had to put it down a few times and read a different book.
I'm pleased that there was a lot of sex because it was probably a reflection of reality. |

I seem to recall reading somewhere years ago that the reason why the explicit sex scenes increase as the series progress is that when Auel first went to a publisher with her books, she had book 1 complete with little explicit sex, book 2 in rough draft (still little explicit sex, but rough drafts get edited/rewritten, right?) and outlines for at least book 3, and possibly book 4. She didn't really want so many sex scenes, but the deal she made with her publisher was that she could leave them out of book 1 since it was already complete, but she had to add them to book 2 and ongoing so the books would sell better.
Or something along those lines, anyway. I don't recall when or where I read this as it was about 15 years ago or more, but it's likely out there somewhere. |

I'm in the midst of reading the series. The Shelters of Stone is next on my to-read list, so I'll definitely check out its availability in ebook.

I'd really like to get the series on my kindle, but paying 6 something for books I've already read (and still own) seems pricey
