The Boy in the Box: The Unsolved Case of America's Unknown Child by David Stout ($1.70)

Quote:
Product Description:

On February 25, 1957, the nude, badly bruised body of a young boy was found in a cardboard box in trash-strewn woods of north Philadelphia. Posters of the “Boy in the Box” soon dotted the city and police stations nationwide—to no avail. In November 1998 the remains were exhumed for DNA analysis, and the boy was reburied as “America’s Unknown Child.”

This is a riveting true account of the infamous child-murder mystery that has gripped Philadelphia and all of America for more than 50 years.
Case Histories: A Novel by Kate Atkinson ($1.99)

Quote:
Product Description:

Case one: A little girl goes missing in the night.
Case two: A beautiful young office worker falls victim to a maniac's apparently random attack.
Case three: A new mother finds herself trapped in a hell of her own making - with a very needy baby and a very demanding husband - until a fit of rage creates a grisly, bloody escape.

Thirty years after the first incident, as private investigator Jackson Brodie begins investigating all three cases, startling connections and discoveries emerge . . .
More! (adding from Deals thread)

The Silver Bear: A Novel by Derek Haas ($1.62)

Quote:
Product Description:
"The intense psychological portrait of a hitman--the anti-Jason Bourne--as he stalks his prey from Boston to LA. He wants you to know him, maybe even admire him, but only for his excellence in his craft. Perhaps he was even born for it. "

"A natural killer,"" his mentor--a middleman named Vespucci--said he was. He proved it with his first professional hit: a Fifth Circuit Court judge in Boston, executed with a sheet of Saran Wrap in the stairwell of her own courthouse. He's proved his merit often, usually with a Glock semiautomatic, but he's improvised too, with his bare hands, the heel of a shoe, knives, even a sewing machine.

He is the consummate assassin, at the top of his form, immune to the psychological strains of his chosen profession. He is what the Russians call a Silver Bear. He calls himself Columbus. It's the name Vespucci gave him, ten years ago, when he discovered a dark, new world of fences, clients, marks, jobs, jack. Not that his real name meant much to him anyway. He never knew his father or his mother, a prostitute who became dangerously involved back in the seventies with an earnest young congressman named Abe Mann, then a rising star in the Democratic Party. The magnetic Abe Mann has since become the Speaker of the House. He is currently running for the Democratic nomination in an exhausting presidential campaign, weaving his way across the country. Columbus is not far behind. But as he pieces together his past and prepares the seamless assassination of his mark, the criminal underworld he has always ruled begins unraveling violently around him."

When the family assembles to watch the penitentes procession in the town square during Easter Week, a Casati tradition, Rita does not join them as planned. Her corpse is later found in the family mausoleum.

Alessandro Cenni, a commissario in the State Police of Umbria, and a handsome bachelor whose twin brother is about to become a bishop, must penetrate the secrets of the Casati family and their circle if he is to discover who killed Rita and why. But he is blocked by their powerful right-wing connections, and by a superior who prefers to arrest a scapegoat rather than risk political suicide. Aided by a loyal staff in his quest for that rarity—justice—he still must acknowledge that no one can defeat the last enemy, death itself.

The Holy Bible: HCSB Digital Text Edition is free courtesy of Holman Bible Publishers.

Book Description
This text edition of the HCSB has been optimized for easy reading on digital devices. Free from the visual clutter of footnotes, cross references, and other links, this edition is fast to navigate and easy to use.

The HCSB was developed by 100 scholars and English stylists from 17 denominations, who prayerfully translated what is one of the most significant Bible translations available today. The HCSB reflects linguistic advances in vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and formatting while it retains meaningful theological terms. In the HCSB you'll find God's personal name (Yahweh), the use of "Messiah" in the New Testament, and the use of "slave" in the New Testament, just to name a few examples. Also, you'll notice the contemporary speech patterns in the HCSB mean that words like "behold" and "shall" are not used. Instead, words or phrases that are common today can be found in their place.

The HCSB employs a first-of-its kind translation philosophy known as Optimal Equivalence, which seeks to achieve an optimal balance of literary precision and emotive clarity through a comprehensive analysis of the text at every level. This process assures maximum transfer of both words and thoughts contained in the original.

These downloads are in the UK Kindle store, for UK customers only. Those who are in the UK and who have kept their US Kindle account cannot get the books without transferring their account to the UK store (a step which appears, for now, to be one that can be repeated, switching between stores at will) and those physically outside the UK are barred from using the UK store (no doubt by IP detection on Amazon's web site). All twelve titles are from the CK-12 Foundation, whose website says that they are "a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce the cost of textbook materials for the K-12 market both in the U.S. and worldwide" and at least one textbook appears to have been partially funded by taxpayers in Virginia. Yet, none of these are available to those of us in the US. All of these are quite large in size (the first one is 36MB and a couple are over 60MB).

UK Kindle free book:

Roseanna by Per Wahlöö
Widely recognised as the greatest masterpieces of crime fiction ever written, these are the original detective stories that pioneered the detective genre and inspired writers from Agatha Christie to Henning Mankell and Graham Greene to Jonathan Franzen. Translated into 35 languages, they have sold over 10 million copies around the world.Written in the 1960s, they are the work of Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo - a husband and wife team from Sweden. The ten novels follow the fortunes of the detective Martin Beck, whose enigmatic, taciturn character has inspired countless other policemen in crime fiction. The novels can be read separately, but do follow a chronological order, so the reader can become familiar with the characters and develop a loyalty to the series. Each book will have a new introduction in order to help bring these books to a new audience.-Roseanna- begins on a July afternoon, the body of a young woman is dredged from Sweden's beautiful Lake Vattern. Three months later, all that Police Inspector Martin Beck knows is that her name is Roseanna, that she came from Lincoln, Nebraska, and that she could have been strangled by any one of eighty-five people. With its authentically rendered settings and vividly realized characters, and its command over the intricately woven details of police detection, -Roseanna- is a masterpiece of suspense and sadness.

There, they discover a hidden cove, which harbors answers about what really happened in Whiskey Gulf. But first they must survive a vicious attack in order to return with the truth.

Bargain book (US Store) - discounted to <$2.00 (Mostly fantasy)

Then Came the Evening by Brian Hart ($1.35) - Family drama

Quote:
Product Description:
Bandy Dorner, home from Vietnam, awakes with his car mired in a canal, his cabin reduced to ashes, and his pregnant wife preparing to leave town with her lover. Within moments, a cop lies bleeding in the road.

Eighteen years later, Bandy's son -- a stranger bearing his name -- returns to the town, where the memory of his father's crime still hangs thick. When an accident brings the family -- paroled father, widowed mother, injured son -- back together, the three must confront their past, and struggle against their fate.

Like a traditional Greek tragedy, suffused with the mud, ice, and rock of the raw Idaho landscape, Then Came the Evening is tautly plotted and emotionally complex -- a stunning debut.
A. D. 62: Pompeii, a novel by Rebecca East ($1.79) - Time travel / Romance

Quote:
Product Description:
A stranded time traveler, Miranda, becomes a household slave in Pompeii. Her experiences provide an "Upstairs/ Downstairs" look at family life in the ancient world. She seeks freedom and love through storytelling; her stories enable her to comment on injustice and also to predict and influence events. She becomes intimately involved with the master and his daughter, but household rivalries lead to conflict and danger.

This is a tender love story that brings together intelligent and sensitive people from different worlds; it brings the vanished city of Pompeii back to life through vivid and accurate historical details. See the web site at http://www.rebecca-east.com for images from ancient art that inspired descriptions of characters, settings, and artifacts.
Last Dragon by J.M. McDermott ($1.99) Fantasy

Quote:
Product Description:

An intricate web of stories weave together to tell a tale of revenge, justice, ambition, and power. Zhan has been sent to find her grandfather, a man accused of killing not only Zhan's family, but every man, woman, and child in their village. What she finds is a shell of a man, and a web of deceit that will test the very foundations of a world she thought she understood.

A tale of revenge that grows into something more, Last Dragon is a literary fantasy novel in the tradition of Gene Wolf and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. J.M. McDermott brings the fantasy genre to new literary heights with a remarkable first novel that will leave critics and readers alike in stunned awe.
Landmoor by Jeff Wheeler ($1.99) Fantasy

Quote:
Product Description:
The warding has failed, and a powerful ancient magic is disturbed -- the Everoot.

Thealos Quickfellow, a Shae from the kingdom of Avisahn, has left his homeland to learn first hand of the threat of the Bandit Rebellion. His life is forever changed when he meets the mysterious Sleepwalker known as Jaerod. For Thealos himself is one of the keys that can open a door to a Silvan artifact which can tame the forbidden side of the Everoot.

As the valley of the kingdoms of Dos-Aralon and Avisahn grows weaker and weaker, the cruel Bandit Rebellion prepares to claim a stronghold in the south. There they will launch a new war by using the Everoot and its power to heal or destroy. The Forger (An Extraordinary Story of Survival in Wartime Berlin) by Cioma Schönhaus ($1.43)

Quote:
Product Description
In Nazi Germany, twenty-year- old graphic artist Cioma Schönhaus found a unique outlet for his talent: he forged documents for people fleeing the Reich, ultimately helping to save hundreds of lives. Even as the Gestapo posted his photo in public, he lived a daringly adventurous life, replete with fine restaurants and beautiful women, all the while managing to elude the Nazis until he could escape in the most unlikely of ways - by bicycling to Switzerland.

"A catalog of hairbreadth escapes, clever ruses, and brazen coups" (New York Times), The Forger is an astonishing and remarkably buoyant tale of wartime heroism and survival.

About the Author
Cioma Schönhaus was born in Berlin in 1922. While on the Gestapo’s wanted list, he escaped with forged papers to Switzerland, where he still lives.
My Private War: Liberated Body, Captive Mind: A World War II POW's Journey by Norman Bussel ($1.17)

Quote:
Product Description
The vivid and emotional story of one soldier's heroic struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder.

1944: Norm Bussel, an introspective and happy-go-lucky teen from Memphis, finds himself bailing out of a burning B-17 bomber just months after his 19th birthday. Touching-down in a field outside Berlin, Norm was immediately seized by local farmhands, who were in the process of lynching him when a passing German soldier put a stop to the execution. For the next year, Norm would struggle to survive at the hands of the Nazis as a prisoner of war.

And that is when the rage began. Rage that he and his fellow captives were cold and starving, their wounds and illnesses left untreated. Rage that men were shot without warning. The rage and emotional turmoil he suffered during that year of hell would follow him home, denying him the peace and stability he and his loved ones longed for. This is one soldier's searing and honest story of his battle with post-traumatic stress disorder. A battle that speaks to the hearts and minds of veterans of all wars who find themselves with liberated bodies but captive minds.

About the Author
On April 29, 1944, Norman Bussel was shot down over Berlin and held prisoner at Stalag Luft. A year later, he was liberated by General Patton’s tank corps, but would spend the next several decades battling the crippling effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Bussel lives in upstate New York.
Remembering Sam: A Wartime Story of Love Loss and Redemption by David Everitt ($1.94)

Quote:
Product Description
Around the time of his own father's funeral ten years ago, David Everitt reads a letter from a friend of his mother's first husband, Sam Kramer, who was killed in combat just days before the end of World War II. The letter establishes once and for all that Sam was a war hero, and that his death was not merely an accident of war. While Everitt had consciously ignored the history of his mother's first marriage, even though she had saved each of Sam's letters from the battlefront, he is now prompted to learn more about Kramer and about his mother's past.

As with the remarkable film The Best Years of Our Lives, Remembering Sam takes readers back to World War II America, to the days of Rosie-the-Riveter patriotism, the brutality and terror of the front lines, and the aftermath of war on its civilian survivors.
The World I Loved by Wadad Markdisi Cortas ($1.43)

Quote:
Product Description
"This is my story, the story of an Arab woman. It is the story of a lost world. It begins in 1917, in Lebanon, when I was seven years old." So opens this haunting memoir by Wadad Makdisi Cortas, who eloquently describes her personal experience of the events that have fractured the Middle East over the past century. Through Cortas' eyes we experience life in Lebanon under the oppressive French mandate, and her desire to forge an Arab identity based on religious tolerance. We learn of her dedication to the education of women, and the difficulties that she overcomes to become the principal of a school in Lebanon. And in final, heartbreaking detail, we watch as her world becomes rent by the "Palestine question," Western interference, and civil war. The World I Loved is both an elegy on Lebanon and her people, and the unforgettable story of one woman's journey from hope to sorrow as she bears painful witness to the undoing of her beloved country by sectarian and religious division.
Live Through This: A Mother's Memoir of Runaway Daughters and Reclaimed Love by Debra Gwartney

Quote:
Product Description
With four young daughters and a miserably failed marriage, Debra Gwartney moves halfway across the country to Eugene, Oregon, for a new job and what she hopes will be a new life for herself and her daughters. The two oldest, Amanda, 15, and Stephanie, 13, have a symbiotic relationship so intense they barely know where one begins and the other leaves off. They come to blame their mother for their family's dislocation and one day the two run off together—to the streets of their own city, then San Francisco, then utterly gone.

Faced with the unraveling of the family she thought she could hold together through blind love, Gwartney begins the painful—and universal—journey of recognizing her own flawed motivations as a mother. Live Through This chronicles Gwartney's frantic efforts to recover the beautiful, intelligent daughters she cherishes. The triumph of her story is its sensitive rendering of how all three women have dug deep for forgiveness and a return to profound love.
Fugitive Days: Memoirs of an Anti-War Activist by Bill Ayers

Quote:
Product Description
A gripping memoir of America in the '60s, of idealists turned radicals, and of a life lived on the run

In February 2008, in the heat of the Democratic primary elections, speculations began circulating in the media about a connection between presidential hopeful Barack Obama and Bill Ayers, a former member of the radical 1960s group the Weather Underground. In Fugitive Days, Ayers tells the real story of the defining events of the radical '60s. The book is an eyewitness account of a young pacifist who helped found one of the most radical political organizations in U.S. history, and who consequently lived for ten years as a fugitive. In a new era of antiwar activism and suppression of protest, Fugitive Days is more poignant and relevant than ever.

Robert became a world-famous entrepreneur, author, and teacher of all things financial, and Emi a highly devout Buddhist nun, author, and teacher of all things spiritual. This book will inspire you along your own life's journey to find your own truth and purpose, your own path to prosperity - both financial and spiritual - all the riches of life that were meant for you...and us all.
Crossroads: 1969 (N/A) by John W. Cassell ($2.00)

Quote:
Product Description
The year is 1969... a time when the youth of America is standing up to its elder rulers, when minorities are demanding their fair share of the American pie. A time when an eternal war fought for misbegotten motives and fueled by a continuous stream of some of the most outrageous lies ever fed to a people by its leadership over the previous eight years continues to gut an entire generation. A time when the old values, the old expectations, the old imperatives are knocked flat.

Seen through the eyes of 21 year old college senior John Cassell, always out of money and soon to be out of college, it is a saga of coming of age at a time when the younger generation accepted very little of the old yardsticks and Thou-Shalt-Nots which traditionally helped that process along.

Based on a true story, and the stories of others, the book follows the young man into the year 1969 as he struggles with the decisions expected of him by elders and demanded of him by life.

The proof’s in this book: brand-new data you can view for yourself, plus all the information you need to know to utilize the same timeless strategies in your portfolio.

Then, Covel walks you through all the concepts and techniques you need to use trend following yourself. One step at a time, one simple chart at a time, you’ll learn how to understand price movements well enough to profit from them consistently--in any market.

Nelson Mandela's Leadership Lessons is a business short from by New Word City

Book Description
Nelson Mandela was born into a royal family, attended elite schools, became a lawyer, and could have settled into a comfortable life as a member of South Africa's black middle class. But his sense of dignity and injustice was fierce, and he dedicated himself to the struggle for freedom and democracy. He paid a heavy price for his choice, often putting his life in danger and spending 27 years in prison, away from his family, barely knowing his children. Guided by a deep pragmatism, he evolved into one of the greatest leaders in modern history, a man who inspired and uplifted the world. His story offers valuable lessons for leaders everywhere.

Nelson Mandela is a fierce opponent of injustice, a proponent of nonviolent resistance, a moral beacon for the world, a man who changed the course of history and created today's South Africa. He occupies a place in the Parthenon of great leaders-a symbol of the struggle for freedom and human rights, an inspiration to us all. But his has been a complicated life, filled with nuance and ambiguity. Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, yet he once advocated the violent overthrow of South Africa's apartheid government and was instrumental in creating a guerilla army dedicated to that end. A child of privilege born into a royal family, he benefitted mightily from his family's connections but was suspended from college and ran away to the slums of Johannesburg to avoid an arranged marriage.
