A while ago I was watching "The Twisted Whiskers Show" and I was struck by the name of one of the characters: Urd The Bird. That led me to wondering why English spelling has so many letter combinations for the same sound? As an example, the following letter combinations have the same sound:

I recently read an article in the New York Post about the addition of a new area code in New York City due running out of phone numbers in the previous area codes. In addition, some areas are having to go to people having to enter the area code with the phone number even for local numbers for the same reason. Added to this is the dramatic increase in the number of devices that need phone numbers (going from just the home phone and business phones at first to now the need for the home phone, cell phones for each family member, also other portable devices, and phones for business).
This led me to wondering, to deal with the issue once and for all, why don't the Phone Companies just bite the bullet and go to something like region codes? By region codes, I mean something like dividing the U. S. into several regions, with each region having its own region code. Using the time zones for an example, you could have the following:

It's been said that you should bloom where you're planted. As I grow older, I tend more and more to take root where I'm planted. Does that count for anything?

I was thinking about Rudolph The Red-Nose Reindeer and how he was rejected by the other reindeer because of his nose. But does that mean that Rudolph is simply a mutant reindeer and there will soon be other mutant reindeer?
What about the elves? It seems like the elves haven't changed but why are they so different from the elves in Lord Of The Rings? Santa's elves are about 1/6 the size of the Lord Of The Rings elves, but could that just be the result of a long-term separation from the rest of the elves? Of course, it may be possible that Santa's elves are actually hobbits who have changed over the years to look a bit more elvish. |
