I've often wondered if there was a galactic "Off Limits" sign warning other civilizations to steer clear of the danger, but whet I really suspect is that once a civilization reaches the technological stage where they are able to reach out to other worlds, they have also reached the stage where it is possible for them to destroy their civilization. That is to say, I strongly suspect that no civilization ever reaches far beyond the level where we now find ourselves before it destroys itself. Pretty bleak, until you recall that life is just a bowl of cherries, and you break out in song.

OTOH, sort of like that movie (the one that I can't remember, with the guy at the beginning saying that giant friendly aliens weren't going to descend from the heavens with loving hearts, or some stuff like that), it's more likely that any civilization THAT far advanced of ours would a) not find us all that interesting and b) be more likely to simply conquer, take resources worth having, and move on or stay as the colonizers.

It's not like our own world's history isn't replete with plenty of examples of precisely this. When technology is advanced enough to look like magic to those less technologically-advanced, the results are fairly predictable. Hell, maybe they'd keep us as pets!

Could the Earth be the equivalent of a giant ant farm that belongs to an alien child as a school project? Would Armageddon be that time when the child is carrying us to his classroom and he drops us?

And now for something completely unrelated...

How do we determine what genre a song falls into? As an example, what makes a country song a country song? Or a classical song a classical song? Could it be that what genre a song belongs to depends on how similar it is to other songs in a genre? Would any song that sounds similar to "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles automatically be classified as rock 'n' roll?

My old AppleTV broke and now I'm a bit torn about what I should get to replace it. On one hand I love Airplay, and obviously being able to play my iTunes library and even use some of my existing apps would be a huge plus, but on the other hand the Roku 3 is cheaper than a AppleTV 4 and, IMO, has a far superior remote (eg actual game controls, audio passthrough, ergonomic, and runs on standard batteries).

Huh, after doing more research I've discovered that despite those controls, the game library on the Roku is virtually nonexistent. Like WTF? I seem to recall playing Angry Birds on a demo unit a few years ago. All I can guess is that Roku didn't market it well in that area and so the developers abandoned them.
