Finished a special issue of the magazine "Pour la science" on the Internet, and now starting a special issue of "La recherche" (Research) on the brain. It usually takes me a long time to finish those, because I tend to read them on trains mostly, and I don't take the train very often these days

Still in the process of reading The Year of the Flood. Took me some time to get into it, but I'm enjoying it now. Also continuing Lois McMaster Bujold's "Miles" series with Cetaganda.

I have Year of the Flood downloaded and ready to read as soon as I can grab some recreational reading time, Florence. Is it as brilliant as others say? Meanwhile, everything's been 'work' reading here, so I won't mention the books I've recently edited -- but some are real crackers, I assure you. There's a blurred dividing line in my job between work and sheer pleasure. Cheers. Neil

It is a wonderful followup to Oryx and Crake! Read it!

I wouldn't call it an all time classic but certainly 9 of 10 stars.

Does The Year of the Flood only make sense if you've read Oryx and Crake first?

I haven't ever read any of Atwood's books--is there a better place to start than either of these two?

I don't really see those two as following each other, you can read only one, or read them in any order.

Whatever you do, get and read _Dune_.

No not really required....but the final experience is enhanced if you do read them in order....

and totally unrelated but she is the author of The Handmaid's Tale -- a classic in the literary field as a whole.

Yes, she's a Writer, with a capital W

She has written several other books that are not sci-fi. I'm not sure which one to suggest because they are all good. Maybe The Blind Assassin, or Cat's Eye. I think those are my favorites.

What do you mean by 'Literary'?

Does that just mean books that appear to be written by someone with dyslexia in a language other than their own that wind up on the New York Times Bestsellers list before publication, or books that real people read for enjoyment?
