I've stopped buying Kindle books entirely. Thankfully, one series I was able to eventually continue - the author pulled them from KU in order to offer as a Kickstarter bonus.

I am unsure what changes to DRM were made by Amazon but I am cautious when I buy books now. I usually will go through a binge of buying several all in one sitting then will not buy more for some period of time. Now a days when I go into a binge, I buy 1 then see if I can create my own backup copy. If successful then I buy the remaining ones and do the same. To date, I have not run into any issues.

June was expensive due primarily to Audible's Member's sale, even restricting to current authors to fill in series. My wishlist is the smallest it has ever been due to more diligent deleting. I can only say that I need to do better. My spreadsheet indicates that if I listen about 4 hours daily, it will take me 10 years to get through just my audiobook collection. Hmmm... As to purchases of ebooks this month, I did pretty good - mostly finishing up the final historical fiction series for Mom. Accidentally purchased one full price and didn't catch it until after the cut off but I'll live. I think I only have a couple left to buy with credits.

The DRM itself hasn't changed, it's access to files with different levels of DRM.

There's a few different Kindle formats. Older ones have had their DRM broken while the newer ones haven't. Amazon recently made it more difficult to access some of the older formats.

Older books (except certain ones - textbooks and, oddly, stuff published in Indian markets) are mostly unaffected.

But newer ones--pretty much anything published this year--you can only get the DeDRMable formats through a few specific methods, and one of those requires buying a Kindle. (Thankfully, the other only requires a free Bluestacks emulator and a bit of fuddling around with console commands. )

And that's why when I upgrade to a new ereader, I always keep the older Kindles around. Sooner or later, I might have an issue, but so far - none.

I confess - I bought a newly published ebook at full price - absolutely had to - The Translations of Seamus Heaney - 700 pages of allegedly ALL the translations of poems - pure bliss at any price.

Still trying to climb back on the wagon. Better this month. Even though I am restricting myself to current authors, I'm still acquiring faster than I'm reading. Hopefully better in August.

Not helped by Joffe Books "free book Friday" or the PD sites continuing to release excellent proofed titles every week. I think I might need immortality or something to be able to catch up. I've cut out visiting the bargain book sections in the Charity shops and the real bookshops.
