Six books in April. Not bad. One of them was a Mary Renault collection that I technically had already borrowed on Amazon Prime, but I figured since it was on sale I should just purchase it. And from Kobo, this time.

And no, despite having been "borrowed" on Amazon Prime for at least five years, I still haven't read it.

I bought six books today. But it was a justified purchase! A series I like a lot and that I'm collecting to have a full re-read had several on special offer.

Luckily the rest of the year I've bought very little. Which is why it's a good idea to practise restraint.

The Big Deal? I saw that and wondered. I think I’d have been tempted to get at least one, but I have already bought enough crime this year.

Seems like I have to join this group as well I'm coming from the French-speaking world, where ebooks are really quite expensive, and I was shocked to find out how many great books are routinely discounted to 0.99£, and also how cheap audiobooks can get when on sale (which is often), on Amazon and Audible UK.

Now I have a huge backlog of books I might never get around to reading or listening to, and am getting at least a new one every other day. This has to stop!

I got caught in the Audible 85% off sale. I thought I was done then DiapDealer mentioned preorders and I now have 19 new audiobooks to listen to.

Welcome to the group!

I have 56 ebooks I bought in 2008 that I still haven't got around to reading...

But my TBR has been decreasing this year.

It's not buying anything that you don't really, really want, even if it's on a really good offer. Instead, wait for the books you really, really want to go on offer, and then buy them!

My average purchase price last year was £1.37. This year so far it's £1.36. I can wait for offers because I have plenty to read while waiting for special offers on the books I want. I have 686 books on my watchlist at uk.ereaderiq.com. Which is how I knew about a special offer on the books I've just bought.

Sigh. So, I had been doing fairly well, but then the new Bruno book came out. Not only did I buy it on release, I "travelled" to the UK to get it 2 months earlier. Definitely backsliding!

On the good side, however, I managed to wait my turn at the Library for Ann Leckie's new book, so I guess that's some progress.

I think buying something on release because you're going to read it right away is fine. It's the buying for inventory that's the major slip.

Ann Leckie is an auto-buy for me. She isn't high literature, but she is the best kind of space opera. My only constraint there is that I make myself finish whatever I am reading before I buy a new one.

She's almost that for me, but if I can get on the library list early enough, I'll wait. And then buy the book later when I can get it on sale.

I greatly miss the ability to get on the waitlist before publication by recommending a purchase. Not only does it mean being further down the list, it means I have to keep checking back to see when/if my library adds it.

I agree. It made it far easier to be more disciplined about early buying.

Me too. I am happy report that I only bought books in series I already am listening to or on my wishlist for quite a while (1 children's and 1 trilogy).

I decided to work through my backlog of Kindle books (all purchased before the DRM changes in January) before buying any other books. Though I'm only counting the books I paid money for.
