Started on The long goodbye, not impressed so far. Finished Jan Guillou's memoirs "Ordets makt och vanmakt", currently only available in Swedish. Found it interesting to follow his career as a journalist and how he began writing books.

We still have Prohibition in this country, only now it goes by the name of The War on Drugs. It has proven equally as successful at generating an organized crime wave.

Yes it has, and for the same reasons. Mind you I'm for for full removal of restricted substance laws like some libertarians, but yeah, I think if they were relaxed then there would be no black market/crime incentive....

loved "The Tomb" by F Paul Wilson (pbook) -amazon - from the Product Description:
Much to the chagrin of his girlfriend, Gia, Repairman Jack doesn't deal with electronic appliances-he fixes situations for people, often putting himself in deadly danger. His latest project is recovering a stolen necklace, which carries with it an ancient curse that may unleash a horde of Bengali demons. Jack is used to danger, but this time Gia's daughter Vicky is threatened. Can Jack overcome the curse of the yellow necklace and bring Vicky safely back home?

and finished "The Legacies" by F Paul Wilson (pbook) and still loving Repairman Jack.
From Booklist:
Fourteen years after his debut in The Tomb, Repairman Jack returns in a clever thriller that's sure to delight Wilson's fans. Jack, a fix-it man who specializes in solving people's problems (and who, as far as the authorities are concerned, doesn't even exist), does a favor for a friend--he recovers some toys stolen from a hospital--and winds up helping a woman solve a deadly mystery from her past. Repairman Jack is a strong man whose moments of compassion don't seem forced, an enigma without being annoyingly mysterious. Confronted with a baffling puzzle, Jack relies on a combination of skill and luck to solve the mystery with a minimum of violence. Wilson's many fans will enjoy this second Repairman Jack story and no doubt hope the author doesn't wait quite so long before writing a third one. I purchased 2184 from smashwords for something to read before starting the next Repairman Jack. It's by MR author, Martin Parish, and since I had a free afternoon, I dove right in.

Surprise! I couldn't put it down. The scenario was especially scary as the beginning could be happening now.

Finished The Warrior's Apprentice last night (which, by the way, is now available free from Baen - see this post) and immediately started on The Vor Game, #3 in the pack I purchased (I already read #2, The Mountains of Mourning). Can you guess I like them?

Thanks for the tip Florence might give the book a try.
There seems to be a whole range of books preceding the book.

Wink Bryce Courtney

I love Bryce Courtney, he makes all his characters just come to life as you are reading you can hear the voice and almost see and smell them.

I just read Danny Dunn it made me cry. Its about a young man Danny that comes back from war a broken man but manages to rebuild his life this is a very touching story and full of inspiration and hope for all that read it.

Bryce's other novel I read some time ago was the Potato factory trilogy
It was later made into a film but the book was much better.

Happy reading

After your recommendation some time ago for the *Lions of Lucerne* I am gradually working my way through Brad Thor's back catalogue. So far they have all been excellent reads.

Just finished *Seven days from Sunday* by M.H.Sargent at $0.99 a good & worthwhile 4 star entertaining read - from Amazon, (converts well !), after a recommendation here for a later book in the series - thought I might as well read them in the correct order.

I got that one to read (still in the queue) after seeing the author interviewed on the The Daily Show. Also have both David Mitchell books - Cloud Atlas and Jacob de Zoet - and am anxious to get started on them.

I was getting bogged down by reading two non-fiction books at the same time: de Tocqueville's On Democracy in America (in french) and Alistair Horne's La Belle France, a short history. Decided to get into a good novel and started Still Alice. Marvelous book - about a woman diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. A couple reviews said they couldn't put the book down, and I'm finding that to be the case. Well written and really fascinating story.

I started reading Pride and Prejudice... however it is a bit tough to follow at the beginning with so many characters introduced in the first 2 chapters... sometimes called by their first name, sometimes by last name.... and there are several Miss somethings to seeing the guy has 5 daughters.

I just went to my brick-and-mortar library to update my card in readiness for Overdrive (coming to Atlanta soon!), and browsed around for a while. I picked up "Dune" and read the first couple of pages, and it looks really good -- how have I not read this? I definitely read sci-fi, but for some reason I missed out on it when I first started down this path, and just never get around to reading it. Do I need to go download it Right Now?
