The Feb. 26th deadline only affects “Download and Transfer via USB”. The method you use to save your books (through Kindle for PC) still works for now, but only for version 2.4.0 or lower; at some point Amazon might stop sending books to older versions, or remove Kindle for PC altogether.

So the answer is yes, it’s working for now, but we don’t know for how long.

DRM keeps your usage to KU terms. Obviously, keeps you from converting to epub and reading on your Kobo. Also means the book expires if you return it or unsubscribe from KU.

I'm trying to help someone out by saving all her ebooks before they remove this option. She's not very tech savvy, though, so I'd like to avoid using a DRM removal plugin if possible. If we just save DRM'd ebooks to her PC and transfer them via USB, is Amazon still able to revoke those books?

As far as I am aware, right now you should still be able to transfer books over USB, however since they are getting rid of the "Download & Transfer" they may be planning to remove the ability to transfer books over USB at all, but we have no confirmation on if they are planning that. Thankfully if you have a DRM copy downloaded you should be able to remove the DRM in the future if it becomes an issue.

When a KU book is downloaded to your device or app, your device/app knows it is a KU book and reports usage as such. If you remove the DRM and send it to your device (USB connection, Send to Kindle, whatever), it is no longer seen as a KU book and usage is not reported to KU so the author will not be paid.

Several years back when I tried KU for a while, there were a few books that showed up as KF8/azw3 that were not DRMmed so I don't think DRM is a necessity for KU. Though I wondered at the time if this was a screwup by Amazon.

So all the world is going to voluntarily delete library loans and rentals after they expire (both copies after they format-shift)?

Only if they have saved the serial number of the device the books were originally downloaded for. If they change the device and don't save the serial number, DRM removal will no longer be possible.

From the Kindle? Yes, if it's connected to wifi. From the PC? No.

I don't object to DRM on loans/borrows/rental. I object to the removal of DRM on them (and most ebook loans outside of Amazon still use ADE rather than LCP).

I just meant that DRM isn't absolutely needed for Amazon's KU tracking to work. It just has to be the KU file delivered as Amazon intended. Amazon seems to have no difficulty deleting files on Kindles.

However record, CD, VHS, DVD etc libraries & rental existed and neither VHS anti-copy nor DVD DRM has ever been effective and most people didn't copy the content.

And indeed ebook & audio book rental DRM and streaming DRM is no barrier at all to commercial pirates, and not much to ordinary consumers.

The thing with copy protecting DVD/Blu-ray etc is that it does not prevent you from playing the disc on another device from a different manufacturer. I understand why some people still rip them for just themselves.

If ebooks ever become completely unable to remove DRM or subscription only then as far as it goes for me I will buy physical copies. But they will be used physical copies and which doesn't help the author or publishers.

If there are any library loans or KU eBooks and they get downloaded with the mass download, they will just get lost in the crowd and kept when the DRM is removed.

Going forward may be a different story.

KU does not get downloaded with the mass download since KU loans are not eligible for Download & Transfer via USB. Since I don't get Amazon books from libraries (no libraries outside the USA do Amazon format ebooks), I can't say if they were D&T eligible.

For anyone reading this after 26-Feb-2025, substitute "were not eligible" for "are not eligible" in the first sentence.
