@ForsCream: Yup, stop and wait for an update, that model is not yet supported.
Said support will come soon(-ish), after you answer the usual series of questions ![]() WiFi or 3G? Where was it bought from, and where was it shipped to? |

But do check its serial number against the (step #1) table and tell us if you do not find it. Its model number may not yet be supported (that is, the 'hotfix' will not run on any model not in the table). |

I recently jailbroke my PW3 using the OP guide here. Everything seems to work great, I have added KUAL and MRInstaller, gargoyle, USBNetwork, and today have been learning KOReader.
However, the one thing that has been bugging me is that in KUAL>Helper+ There is an option the says "Begin Grayed Installer" and it is grayed out. Is this normal and what is it supposed to do anyway? |

@ytsejam1138: That's a bit mystifying, 'cause KUAL doesn't support printing stuff in gray ^^.
In any case, it's probably black but with ghosting, so, on to the explanation: it force launches the OTA updater. (It used to be useful because the system doesn't always detect new packages, so this was needed when you pushed packages over SSH, for instance). TL;DR: (Mostly) Perfectly useless now that we have MRPI ![]() |

The update_*.bin format packages are 'model locked' -
On some (early) model Kindles, the firmware misreads the 'for model' information inside of the package and that option is used to make it reconsider its first finding. ![]() Not required on your model of Kindle - ignore it (or delete it in the /extensions directory tree). Edit: Typed too slowly, see above. |

Another "special case" discovered that is not handled by the directions as written right now:
New Kindle in hands of person who has not used a Kindle before. I will have to give that situation a lot of thought before changing the directions, since I don't want to re-write the "Kindle User's Guide" as part of the jail break. ![]() |

Directions edited for another special case -
The Kindle must be registered with Amazon because some firmware versions do not allow access to the UYK option unless registered. (and you can't fake register it because you are not jailbroken yet) The factory initial firmware can be installed with a re-boot. The 'hotfix' package can only be installed by the UYK (Update Your Kindle) menu option. Note: I think all of them are that way for the devices which are the subject of this thread, but I have not checked all of them. |

Issue: After factory reset of brand new Black 7th Gen PW3 (serial G090G1..., FW 5.7.4), device boots directly to WiFi setup menu after language menu. "Upgrade Your Kindle" option cannot be selected until WiFi is set up and device is connected to Amazon account by logging in with email and password.
I don't know if proceeding in this manner would interfere with the downgrade, but I hoped to keep the device as untouched as possible before attempting. Solution: Manually reboot device from the WiFi screen by holding down the power button, then selecting "Restart". The device will boot into the Home menu without a connected account or WiFi setup. ---------- To clarify: In Step 4, it is not immediately clear how a user that ends up in the WiFi menu at the end of Step 2 might access Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Update Your Kindle. Rebooting is one way to do this without logging in. The rest of the procedure was completed without problems. If logging in would not affect the process in any way, feel free to disregard this post; however, new Kindle users might benefit from clarity on this point at the very beginning of Step 4, even a simple "Select language, set up WiFi and connect Amazon account if desired, or reboot via the physical power button to skip directly to the Home screen." Ok, so I think my issue is new - at least I did a fairly good amount of searching to try and find a solution before registering here and posting, but to no avail.
I have a brand new KV. I didn't write down what FW version was installed before starting... Anyway I followed the instructions to the letter and after step 5 I get no jailbreak file on the device and I don't see the key when it's mounted as a drive on my computer. I figure that might not be an issue, so I continue to step 6. I copied the necessary file (JailBreak-1.14.N-FW-5.x-hotfix) to my KV, eject it and pull the usb cable. I run the update, but when my KV reboots, I get Error 007 Update Failed. Now, I can't install the update anymore so I start over (from step 1) - 3 or 4 more times with the same result each time. Also, I DID register my KV with Amazon before starting. I saw it in my Amazon account. Do I give up at this point and deal with a non-JB KV? Please help! Thank you. Another solution is to simply register the device (again) after the 'reset'.
In fact - Since you are going from customer-5.7.4 to factory-5.7.4, there is no need to do the 'reset' at all. Which then would leave the registration just as it was before your started. Note that I already added that "Device must be registered" note to the directions. |

@arsa13:
From where and when did you get the files you are using? Translation: Download them all again, and this time check the md5sum of the factory firmware image and force your un-zip program to test the integrity of the hotfix achrive when you unpack it. Be certain sure that the un-archive program you are using does not change line endings. Note: You can not see the key on the small portion of the file system you can see over USB. It is written to an internal part of the file system that you can not see. |

I downloaded the files about 24 hours ago.
- Initial KV 5.5.0 FW from gunshi.org link from the PasteBin link in step 3. - Branch Delay's factory firmware jail break from this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=275887 - Hotfix from this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=1597 I tested the MD5 of the factory FW before I started last night, and again tonight, thinking that was a possible issue. It checked out both times.I'm using 7-zip on Windows. KV nickname: 9013 I understand about not being able to see the key. I still don't have the jailbreak file on my device after step 5... Any more things I should check? |

"don't have jailbreak file ..."
How and where are you looking for it? Over the USB cable? It should be under /documents. |
