Whew! Thanks. Thought it might have been my eyes just getting worse! I've got a fairly small TV anyway, but I don't remember having as much trouble reading the menus on my Roku3. I'll have to fire it back up and compare.

I have no problem with Roku's font but I have to squint something fierce to see the Fire Stick menus.

Keep an eye on your Parental Controls mine got disabled somehow. I just had someone who was playing a slot game had plenty of coins left but this app had a popup suddenly and they wound up purchasing a $5 booster pack.

The Stick just got a whole lot more interesting, especially for travelers:
http://www.cnet.com/news/dish-launch...s-espn-disney/ Dish now offers a package of live TV channels that includes ESPN. No CSPAN, so no Book TV. But they are promising more channels to come. Quote:

Now that's getting intriguing. Sports are arguably the biggest thing keeping people on cable. I'm no millenial, but I ditched cable years ago, and sports are one of the things I miss. I wind up listening to games on the radio, because the cable packages have become ridiculous. Add the Big Ten Network to that list, and it would be quite a package. I don't know that I would want this all year, I'd probably drop it after basketball season, and pick it up again for football season. If this included ESPN3, I'd be highly tempted.
I have the Fire TV box, but if I got this package, I'd be tempted to buy a Stick just to make this portable. Then I could bring my Stick to a friend's house to watch the game. Here's another thing that could be an opportunity: Most colleges have a package where you can watch games online. Mostly it is for games that aren't covered by cable channels, such as the "minor" sports. You can hook your computer up to the TV set, but that is a pain. If instead, you could just have a Fire TV app, that would make these packages much more enticing. |

Most streaming apps do dynamic quality depending on available bandwidth but some are much better at it than others. My experiences with live streaming ESPN on XBOX are indistinguishable from the cable feed (720p), while MLB.TV on XBOX sacrifices a bit of video quality (slightly lower frame rate) to maintain resolution. Given that they are doing on-the-fly conversion of fast motion 1080i video it is understandable and not annoying. Just a bit odd-looking... The CBS app on the Fire Stick should give you an idea of what ESPN should aspire to on it: very good live video with no noticeable frame rate degradation. |

I've read that the industry's big secret is that while the popularity of sports and ESPN are well known, there are a huge number of Americans who don't care about sports, and would drop the sports channels and their high fees if they were given the opportunity!
