poem: Fast car

Just written, hot off the synapses, a bit of hot sauce, served while still warm.

( edit: how fast ? All but the last paragraph written while the video ran once. And I had a couple of typos to fix here after I posted it. )

[ inspired by a video on youtube of Tracy Chapman singing 'Fast Car'. ]
[ mostly the long stretch of highway, with sagebrush and clouds, and the blacktop going off into the vanishing point on the distant horizon. ]

Lonesome highway, I am driving fast,
down the road,
one lane each way.

I can almost hear the owls calling in the night,
looking for mice and kangaroo rats,
running from sage brush to sage brush.

Saguaro cacti over the horizon,
I can hear, the loneliness calling.

Nothing for me here,
just the landscape,
moving by fast,
hoping not to run out of gasoline,
before the next town.

Top down, maybe the sun and heat,
are getting to me,
as I can hear a distant Spanish guitar,
playing music,
while castanets rattle in some Cantina,
or was that in the town I just left ?

Nuevo Mars they said,
out by Wolf 359,
was the place to go to,
a distant M-type star,
small civilization,
mostly an outpost,
lots of roads, few can afford the journey,
just a few people living there,
in a few buildings,
but things will get better,
in the sweet by and by.

The starships will come again,
trade will flouish,
so I drive my car fast,
in rememberance of what once was.

The strech of highway in the photo for that song reminds me of long ago.

My parents and I were driving down the highway. West of Albequerque, New Mexico. Dad had been transferred, we were going down the highway. Route 66.

Just like the photo. The sides of the highway going until they made just a small dot on the horizon. There were hills for a long while, the highway deep within, radio station cutting in and out. Bothered dad, but I thought it was neat.

Clouds off to the left, thunderstorm raining hard. Blotting out the horizon. Giving someone out there a flash flood.

Hot and mostly clear where we were. Hot. Air conditioner not all that good in the small car. Over 100F, about 10 percent humidity.

No houses. No trees. Some shrubs, dry.

Road wobbling in the heat waves.

Signs miles behind saying 'get your radiator water bag here ! LAST Chance before the desert !'.

Mom and I worried. Dad saying it will be okay.

Mom made dad change to driving at night. No artificial lights for almost the entire night. A few, very few, other cars. The Milky Way blazing overhead.

We made it. But gee, it was hot even at night.

Cleaning Up after the War

Haul the bodies away
scrub up the blood
repair the bullet-holed walls
and spin the history new

Took today off work to try and get my head around my poetry writing -- that's the result for now.

but I feel like I made some progress in the right direction.

marched did we, and marked,
our papers then were counted;
but we remain lost.

made our mark to count,
long hours we then a-waited;
do it all again....

they won, but did not;
they lost, but did not concede,
they came third, in might!

but not to win;
in second place they came,
but not to lose;
came last they did
to make the choice
that we could
not.....
