Thanks for this mod, you guys! It's super useful! I flailed and hemmed and hawwed for like, 15 mins after installing before I finally found where the light (toggle) was and there it was! I normally use my phone which has moonreader on night mode and now that I figured out how to use this on my kobo aura I'll be using it instead of my phone. The kobo aura has better battery life anyway.

Good luck.
Thanks. 3% of brightness is working.

You guys are so great. You make the e-reader more perfect. Thanks a lot.

Probably you installed the build13 version in first page, not the build13H2O.
1. Download the file attached and install KoboRoot.tgz from install directory.
2. After the install, connect to PC and edit .kobo/nightmode.ini and look for in the brightness section and change these options to value shown

Code:
[brightness]
1percentPatch = yes
timeout = 4
100 = toggleNightMode
Now on, when brightness is set to 100% (with slide screen slide-botton) and hold it push 4 seconds, toggle Nightmode on/off
Thanks

Thanks to all the wizards who contributed to this fantastic hack, which should be part of the firmware. I had researched this thread prior to recently getting my Aura (not HD), and it is the only hack (so far) that I have done. I had several failed attempts before trying the HARDWARE light button, rather than the toolbar ICONS, which did not work. So try everything before giving up. Also,I used the regular night mode hack, but liked the idea behind the Nightmode and reset without button version. It should be great for anyone that cannot access any of the other controls.

I thought I try it first on my kobo glo before trying it on my kobo glo HD but it does not seem to work. Is there a step by step manual how to let nightmode work on a kobo glo HD?
Try powering off and switching back on after you eject the ereader from pc ...

Thanks a lot to traycold for this updated version of the nightmode, it's so much easier to trigger it with the brightness slider

I installed kobo-nightmode_build13H2O.zip
after install, I adjusted the nightmode.ini Brightness setting, saved the file and safely removed Aura from PC;

Code:
[brightness]
1percentPatch = yes # yes / no : Nickel set brightness to 2% even when on UI it is set to 1%
				# this patch will force brightenss to 1% when:
				# - it was set to 1%, then set to 0% (for instance: stand-by) then changed again to "what Nickel says is 2%"
				# - it was set to 3%, then set to 1% then changed again to "what Nickel says is 2%"
timeout = 2 # time in seconds, after brightness is set (and maintained) to a given level, to toggle the action set to that level
## syntax for associating the trigger of an action when brightness is set to X%:
## X=<command/script>
## special actions:
## - toggleNightMode: toggle Nightmode on / off
## - enableNightMode: force enabling Nightmode
## - disableNightMode: force disabling Nightmode
100 = toggleNightMode # when brightness is set to 3% : toggle Nightmode
1 = toggleNightMode
# some examples of invoking any script when brightness is set to X% for at least TIMEOUT seconds
#4 = touch /mnt/onboard/hello.world
#5 = touch /mnt/onboard/hello.world.async &

New settings did not work. I rebooted my Aura, and now the new settings work, however the nightmode.ini file now has all the # comments removed;

Code:
[brightness]
1percentPatch                  = yes
timeout                        = 2
1                              = toggleNightMode
100                            = toggleNightMode
If I make changes now, save the file the changes, safely remove kobo, and then reconnect to my PC, the settings always revert back to the last above settings(without comments).It seems that after adjusting the settings the first time, and rebooting it installs these settings permanently. Is this by design?

Actually it works with my Aura (I have the last firmware installed).

1) I uninstalled the old version of the nightmode from my kobo
2) I installed the new one
3) I edited the config file
4) I disconnected my kobo
5) I connected it again and edited the config file (which had reverted to his original state)
6) I disconnected my kobo and rebooted it
7) now it works and the config file has kept my changes

The config file is only read on startup, so you always need to reboot after you make the change anyway.

This sounds horrible, I know... but I just tried to read 35 pages of different ways and updates of files, etc, and I am honestly lost.

Can someone summarize this for a n00b, please...? Or a step-by-step?
I don't want to brick anything by using an outdated method or file, or what looks to be registry or .bat adjustments, etc.
I'm not being lazy, just can't afford to make a mistake and am not confident with what I have read through.

Sincerely appreciated,

(Aura H2O with the latest stock firmware.)

You should be able to do a factory reset using the buttons.

I have now tried:
- holding the powerbutton for a while. (1 min or so)
- clicking the reset button on the bottom with a pin.
- holding the reset button for a few seconds.
- holding the lightbutton, and pulling the powerbutton multiple times as described here: https://www.kobo.com/help/en-US/arti...ura-hdkobo-glo

anything else i can try?

The last one will only work if the device actually starts. The rest, are part of the steps.

The factory reset with the buttons is:

- Charge the device for at least an hour.
- Hold the power switch in the off position for 20 seconds.
- Hold the light button down and turn it on.
- Release the light button when the LED flashing changes or the screen changes.

That should would to revive it.
