Oh! I see. Yes, in that case we're here to help.

Perhaps we can help best by encouraging your reading of classics, by recommending out own favourites. That way you won't have time to go out buying modern ebooks.

And, of course, there are the many, many well-formatted classics here at Mobileread to browse.

What kind of books do you like reading? Romance, Mystery, Historical, Horror, Non-fiction?

I have just discovered that I had about $20 in Fictionwise dollars sitting in my account. I had not visited the site for over a year. I decided to try some of George R R Martins books. 1) Ice Dragon $1 2) Sandkings $2 and 3) Howard Who? $10. This week I also downloaded over 100 of Baen's free books and am currently reading Med Ship by Murray Leinster. It's very good. I've been reading very slowly this year, only about 1 book a week. I still have not gotten around to reading Jeffrey Carvers books that I've had in my 'To Be Read' for over a year.

My solution to ebook buying addiction was simple. When I got my e-reader I set out a monthly budget of about $20 and then made a spreadsheet that tells me how much I've got in my account. I accrue the money daily -- all $0.66 of it -- and enter any expenditures on e-books into it. Right now it's giving me a red circle and indicating that my account balance is -$1.29.

Of course this relies on self-monitoring and honesty in recording expenditures. It also means that I spend a lot of time amassing lists of e-books I'd like to buy. I can totally understand anyone who has purchased more than they can possible read.

Indeed and the thread I started titled "Favorite Classic book?" might be a place to look as well.

*sigh* I'm having a long, hideous day at work. I'm doing 3 peoples' jobs today [damn those summer vacations!] - who kindly left me something to do so I wouldn't have time to miss them.

Doesn't this qualify me to buy an ebook as a reward for not killing someone today? Don't I deserve one? [*whine* *whine*] [*sniff*]

You deserve more! You deserve two! But of the $2.99 variety.

No! But when you get some time to do what you want, you are allowed to read one of the ebooks you've already bought.

At least, until your TBR pile is under control.

I'm satisfied with a month-long TBR list. I read both books that I blog about (indie books submitted to me), and books outside of that. For the indie books, I finish one book a week, so I've committed to reviewing 4 at any given time. I don't like that number to get too high, because I'm always paranoid that someone will submit a really excellent book that I can't get around to. I read the first five pages, and skim through the sample, then commit to reviewing it. Even if it ends up not being my kind of read, I force myself to finish it so I can leave behind a review and add one more to the "Books Read in 2011" list.

For stuff outside of my indie blogging, I still have a ton of both ebooks (free, not purchased. I read everything I buy instantly), and paperbooks to tide me over at any given point in time. I have a 10 page list of books to read, but I don't own that many of them, I mostly borrow them from the library. So I read them in the order of (1) my mood (2) are they free in the library? As much as I read consistently, I'm not a hoarder like others in this board ;D And I haven't bought ebooks recently because I've been so busy with the free review copies.

and then felt dizzy! (I've been waiting for this series for years)

and then ..... you know what happened then ....

Only $4.50 per book.

I am so happy I can't feel guilty!

Resist the urge. Read another of the books in your TBR list. Just add anything that catches your fancy to your wishlist at your favourite ebook retailer.

Remember: ebooks likely to get cheaper over time. And there are often special offers. Wait until you actually want to read it before you buy — you'll almost certainly save money.

Nope, no special offers for us non-US people... But I'm missing the last book of the series I'm reading, and I only have 3 books left before I reach that missing book!

I think this is the root of my eBook acquisition addiction: it's easy to BUY books at work or when busy, and harder to READ books at work or when busy.

I'd really so much rather be reading than buying. But sometimes I can't read and when I can't read at all, buying FEELS kind of like reading. It's...like...a statement of intention to read. Quiet heady, really.
